TL;DR : Indian Shilka with a stronger engine and AESA radar.

Hello, and welcome to my suggestion. Today I would like to suggest a upgrade to a well know SPAAG protecting the sky for over 80 years! This upgrade brings it up to standards of modern systems, and allows it to engage one of the most dangerous threats of the current battlefields, Drones.

Introducing:

Upgraded Schilka

History

In the 1950s, the Soviet Army realized that existing air defense systems, such as the ZSU-57-2, were outdated by the increasingly fast and maneuverable combat aircraft and helicopters. This led to the development of a more advanced system that could operate in all weather conditions and be effective against fast aircraft. The new gun was to have an improved fire control system, an increased rate of fire, and the ability to operate on the move. The resault of said development was a ZSU-23-4, equipped with 4 23mm guns and a radar, allowing for a precise stream of fire exactly where it was needed.

India bought 100 of Shilka vehicles in the 1970s and used them over the years. Currently the main SPAAG of the Indian army is a 2S6 Tunguska, while Shilkas were redirected to protecting less important assets. However, as time passed, the threat presented on the current battlefield by drones, small agile flying crafts, became evident. That forced the Indian Army to take action. Bharat Electronics Limited, in cooperation with Israel Aerospace Industries, designed an upgrade to the already obsolite 75 Shilka vehicles, tuning them into an anti-drone role. The vehicle was upgraded with a new engine producing 364 hp, a new APU, a new operator console, and the most important part of the upgrade, AESA radar with an IR camera, a TV camera, and a laser rangefinder. All of those upgrades allow the new and improved Shilka to protect the sky once again.

Now that History is out of the way, time to talk about specifications.

I’m torn. It’s cool and I’m all for more Indian vehicles, but I don’t think the British tree needs a ZSU-23-4, so +0.5.

What BR would you place this at?

I will be honest, idk. It has a much stronger radar with 3rd gen TVD, and a better engine but at the end of the day it is a Shilka. 8.0-8.3

we’ve got 3 of them in game already …why not a 4th for India

That’s neat.
Good potential 8.7.

@ChieftainWarrior
Vehicle additions should never be about need.
Especially something unique like AESA radar Shilka.

Need should still be considered, though. The UK already have 3(!) 8.3 SPAAs, we don’t need a 4th that sits at basically the same BR. Ideally we’d get something around 9.0-9.3 to fill the gap between 8.3 and 10.3.

Marksman has a terrible tracking mode.
ZA-35 has limited ammo [not my problem], and a tall search radar.
This Shilka would be a good buff to both ammo and radar, perfect for my 9.3 lineup.

Thb it is still at least a year before anyone from Gaijin even looks at it, so by that time we will get more stuff.
Rapier should be here soon, and maybe a s53 will come too.

+1 sure, why not? I think it should receive 8.7-9.0 at maximum, because it’s still Shilka

Can track from 20k meters but the guns effective range is still 2500m 😂

could be interesting, i believe certain ground radar sets have datalink so having an Aesa on your team at such a low BR (seeing as most people think this is a 8.3-8.7 thing) could make some saclos vehicles more viable with some good teamplay.
