I wonder what the odds are of Ukraine building a new main battle tank-model from scratch? They’ve got plenty of IFV’s, TD’s, Mortar, AD, etc. vehicles being either modified or produced.

I think the chances are zero in the near future. I think about 15+years before any theoretical new MBT will be produced “en masse”
Just because of economical situation Ukraine on its own is unable to start development at the moment. A few prototypes based on the current chassis (i.e. T-64 or T-80) maybe, but not a full scale production of something entirely new

Yes

  • While the BMP-1U isn’t really used by the Ukrainian Army anymore and they only had a few of them, the vehicle and remote Shkval combat module is utilized in several other countries. This variant does not have a thermal imager, it does offset the hindrance through the use of the ZTM-1 30mm autocannon (w/ likely 3UBR8 APDS rounds), KT-7.62mm coaxial machine gun, KBA-117 30mm grenade launcher, and 2x 9M113 Konkurs anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM).
  • Later, the Shkval combat module would be upgraded to the Shkval-A standard which received the KLW-1 Thermal Camera, and the ability to utilize the Barrier-212 ATGM system with the RK-2S (tandem-HEAT 800mm of penetration) and RK-2OF missiles. This variant has been known as the BMP-1M or the BMP-1U.

  • The difference between the Shkval-A (Top) and early Shkval (Bottom) combat modules.
