Background History

Plans to further upgrade the Japanese tank fleet emerged around 2012-2013, which also revealed that Japan was working on its own Active Protection Systems, one of which became a successful prototype in 2015; and plans to mount it on Type 90 and Type 10.
In 2025, new documents emerged showing that Type 10s were to be equipped with the German StrikeShield ADS and an RWS, improving the existing fleet to compensate for the aging and slowly retiring Type 90 series.
The improved Type 10(C) entered production in 2025 and was delivered that same year.
In 2024, the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) issued a requirement for a new escort vehicle, a modern infantry fighting vehicle design, and a specialized anti-drone vehicle. These were to fully or partially replace outdated systems such as the Type 87 SPAAG, the Type 93, and the Type 89 IFV. Due to increasing tensions in the region and the lack of suitable alternatives, the new platform had to be both easy to maintain and quickly produced.
A modified version of the Type 10(C) was chosen as the basis, equipped with the StrikeShield Active Defense System (ADS) and a dozer blade to simplify production, maintenance, and repair.
A new turret was developed for the TAFVX. The main armament is based on the 35mm cannon of the Type 87 SPAAG, which was further developed in cooperation with Germany and became a cost-effective solution for near-indigenous license production of the similar 35mm KBA found on the SkyRanger 35.
To ensure anti-drone capability, the JMD062 round (a derivative of the AHEAD ammunition) was introduced, supplemented by four Type 91 Kai MANPADs.
For anti-tank defense, the vehicle relies on APFSDS and four AGM-114L Hellfire missiles.
Additional sensors improve situational awareness – and the radar system of the Type 87 SPAAG was adopted and modernized with K-band AESA arrays.
After three and a half years of development, the vehicle was officially unveiled and tested in 2027. It was designated the Type 27 “Tactical Armored Fighting Vehicle” (TAFV). That same year, the JGSDF ordered an initial batch of 86 vehicles. The first deliveries took place in late 2028.

The Type 27 TAFV Overall

The Type 27 Tactical Armored Fighting Vehicle (TAFV) was developed as a modern escort and support vehicle for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF). Based on the proven Type 10(C) chassis, it combines advanced protection systems, powerful weapons, and modern sensors to combat a wide range of threats, including drones, armored vehicles, and aerial targets.
For protection, the Type 27 relies on the 360° StrikeShield Active Defense System (ADS), which actively defends against incoming threats. A Laser Warning System (LWS) provides early detection of enemy targets, while Infrared Jamming (IR) systems increase protection against missiles.
The vehicle also features a modern K-band AESA radar array, enabling high-precision target acquisition and airspace surveillance.
The Type 27’s armament is versatile and designed for different threat scenarios. To combat aerial targets and drones, the vehicle has twin 35 mm KBA cannons equipped with JMD062 AHEAD ammunition. This special ammunition creates a cloud of destructive particles when fired, which is particularly effective against small, fast-moving targets. The 35 mm JM53A2 APFSDS ammunition with approximately 140 mm penetration is used against armored vehicles. The Type 27 is also equipped with four AGM-114L Hellfire missiles, which feature millimeter-wave radar (MMW) and inertial navigation and operate according to the fire-and-forget principle. A powerful 22.6-liter MHI 8VA 34WTK diesel V8 engine delivers 1,200 hp at 2,300 rpm, ensuring high mobility. With a power-to-weight ratio of 28 hp per ton, the vehicle offers excellent acceleration and off-road capability.
