Hello everyone :), what I would like to introduce today is Tu-4 D-500/G-310.
After World War II, the Soviet Union developed the S-25 surface to air missile and widely deployed it around Moscow, forming a large air defense circle to prevent the city from being attacked by bombers carrying nuclear weapons. But these missiles rely on huge radar bases, which are stationary and always have blind spots that cannot be scanned. If there is a sudden technical malfunction, there will be a window of air defense failure, and if there is a large-scale air raid, it will give the enemy an opportunity to take advantage. In order to avoid such a situation, the Soviet Union began the development of air defense interceptors. This project requires the manufacture of an aircraft that carries radar and uses missiles, allowing it to maneuver and patrol around Moscow’s air defense circle or deploy quickly, and to engage in combat with the enemy alone when detected.
Due to the need for long-term patrols within the air defense zone, retrofitting existing long-range aircraft is a more suitable option. A Figure 4 aircraft was selected for modification, numbered 226404. After modification, several radars were added, including AR-27 search radar, AR-33 identification friend or foe radar, AR-46 target tracking and missile guidance radar, and AR-49 missile guidance radar. Despite installing these radars, it did not dismantle the turret used for self-defense.

The missiles used are G-300 and G-301, a total of four. This is a scaled down version of the S-25 surface to air missile, using radar beam guidance and tracking radar linkage. The G-300 is referred to as product-210, and unlike the ground to air version, it has added two additional boosters. It has a cross shaped rudder, and X-shaped wings with ailerons. The maximum range envisioned is 10km. The higher ups are not satisfied with this range and request improvements. Afterwards, an upgraded model called G-301 emerged, known as product-211, which had increased length and diameter, eliminated boosters, and was equipped with a more powerful liquid rocket engine, with a maximum range of 15km. The missile underwent ground and live fire tests, but no guidance equipment was installed and only relied on autopilot for flight. The test results reflect well, obtaining important characteristics and basic conclusions about the performance of air-to-air systems In the plan, the modified Tu-4 can detect and shoot down flying objects of the same size as itself from a distance of 35km.

These missile tests were conducted between 1952-53, all fired by the only modified Tu-4. The modified Tu-4 is called G-310, which includes all guidance equipment for the D-500 radar and missile. Although the test results showed that this method was feasible, the project was ultimately halted. The reason is that the Tu-4 flight cost is too high, and it is not cost-effective to carry missiles for attack. The project focus should be on using jets to carry more advanced missiles. So the G-310 project was terminated on August 14, 1953, according to MAP Order No. 507ss. The prototype was dismantled and recycled.
Although the G-310 did not successfully enter service, it also provided ideas for the development of interceptor aircraft in the future. The Soviet Union ultimately preferred to use the MiG-17, install radar, and intercept with K-5M air-to-air missiles.
The Tu-4 is a bulky heavy bomber. The modified G-310 has gained the ability to launch air-to-air missiles, but retains its original self-defense turret. This gives it the ability to engage in long-range combat with fighter jets, and when enemy planes approach, it can also use turrets for attacks. This is a unique aircraft in the world, similar to the SO.4050IIN in War Thunder, with simpler gameplay. Due to the modification of the bomb bay into radar, this aircraft cannot carry any bombs. Suggested BR is 8.3.
