They should atleast rename the GR.1 to “Tornado GR.1 (Early)”. Additionally because it has the PGMs and LGBs doesnt that mean it would automatically be late production or at least upgraded, getting the Mk 103s?
Yeah… we tried that argument. The response was something like
“ASSTA and IDS (1995) are specific date of service aircraft where as the GR1 is just a generalised aircraft with no specific date, meaning its got the airframe from early in its service and the loadout from its end of life. The Tornado Gr4 is intended to give Britain the Mk103 engine and so the GR1 does not need it”
GIven that not even the “early” tornados from the other nations has the Mk101, really stings and proves just how much nonsense it really is. Its why many think the devs actively punish Britain for no reason.
But would kill for an actual “early” version because not only would that maybe finally give us one at 11.3. But would love to use the Tornado at 10.0 in GRB.
But thats now getting a bit off topic
whats funny is the 11.3 early tornado in Italy has mk 103s, no clue why britain gets such horrible treatment in air. At least UK ground is starting to catch up, and low tier props have never been a problem
yeah exactly. By their own logic. A200, MFG and WTD61 should all have Mk101 engines
as for ground, barely, still unplayable top tier. but that is a matter for a different thread

I seem to recall that Ian Black in his book on the Tornado mentioned that literally all Tornadoes that received the Mk 101 were fitted with the Mk 103 not too much longer later in their service life
Oh yeah, it is 100% a Gaijin decision to artificially nerf the Tornado Gr1. The only difference that might be relevant is the Mk13 bombs which are slightly better than the Mk83s. But the loss in engine power is far more significant than the advantage those bombs give and if its a really major issue. Just give the GR1 slightly lower SL/RP rewards
Gaijin’s arbitrary decision making is probably my least favourite thing about that company.
Also, the German (and probably Italian) Tornadoes should get British 1000lbs bombs too, as the WTD61 used them on theirs.

Yeah, that is definetly the other option if its a concern. Though iirc, there was issue with each nation wanting different mountigs which actually defeated a large chunk of the inter-operability of the Tornado or something
I wonder if you could argue for PGMs on the Tornado A200C as well. Those would be an excellent addition

It was a passage in “Tornado Boys” that Im currently “reading” but im listening to it on audible and so cant screenshot the right pages that discussed it
Just looked up the armament section of Bernd & Frank Vetter’s book on the Tornado, and they state that all users of the plane used the Mk 80 series of bombs. Implying an interoperability between the users. Though I must in fairness state that said book was re-published a few years after the UK retired their Tonkas
Well. Britain does get the Mk83. The question is whether Germany and Italy can get the Mk13 which is slgihtly more powerful
I think they can and should. But it is no loss if they wouldn’t. What is a loss however is the poor implementation of what should be Italy’s ultimate Tornado
