The fundamental issues with the new vehicle stat card images is that they are boring, cartoony, and lack identity. Let’s go through these 1 at a time:
-
The new vehicle stat card images are just plain boring. They all look the same. While yes, it does look good on certain vehicles such as the K9 and BTR-80A, they overall lack anything interesting to them. Everything now looks the same. Same angle, same lighting, same everything.
-
The new vehicle stat card images are cartoony. The texture rendering quality on them appears to be quite low as they lack any texture to them. They look too smooth, too perfect, not like the real vehicles and like the full quality textures ingame. The lack of a background also makes most aircraft look like their canopy has no glass on it. This cartoony look also gives these images the feel of a mobile game, not a PC/console game like War Thunder. They look like War Thunder Mobile in a way, not the level of visual quality that is expected and traditionally seen in War Thunder.
-
The new vehicle stat card images lack identity. The old images had a unique character to them. They showed vehicles from unique angles, with unique weapon loadouts, and with certain skins. It gave them character. In addition, the quality of the image showed what era they were from. Slowly, as vehicles got more modern, the quality of the image increased, both in terms of its clarity and lack of gate weave — the graininess that is seen on and characterizes old film — and whether or not it had color.
A suggested fix to this is quite simple: simply make it a setting for what type of icon you want to have. If Gaijn wants to go further, they could allow players to decide which icon type to turn on depending on the gamemode or even create a setting that would allow players to decide on a per-vehicle basis, which is, in my opinion, the best option.
I would suggest having the old stat card images as the default images with the option to turn on the newer ones, preferably with options to do it on a per-vehicle basis and based on vehicle type. These new statcards are fundamentally misguided in concept and fundamentally flawed in practice, and while having them might be a welcome addition for some, removing the old images altogether to make way for the new ones is quite sad to see and worsens the stat card for all vehicles.
