The AIM-9 Sidewinder - History, Design, Performance & Discussion

yes, AIM-9Ms are still used today on modern aircraft for live fire practice against drones, the only thing that limits backwards compatibility is the connecter pin count which is what that black dangly bit on the AIM-9s are

here is an image of a F-15C firing off a AIM-9M

So the aircraft it list (f14D,av8B, and ah1w)are capable for aim9x just limited to reduced capacity?

Sort of, the F-14D and AV-8B lack a HMD; no idea what the AH-1W would lack, or if it wasn’t transitioned to the AH-1Z for service purposes, as the -1Z began replacing the -1W in service in late 2010(last AH-1W Unit was moved to the -1Z in 2020). So there is a good chance as the USMC had the -9X reach IOC in early 2004 so there is a significant overlap of about 5 and a half years there.

same with the F/A-18s, and F-16s, but you know gaijin when it comes to US vehicles

tbf right now the only aircraft that should get 9x is the ah1z

its just too much power creep to add it to other platforms

It’s definitely not AIM-7R because that photo was made even before 7F production, so i call it 7T(thermal). IDK how it was called IRL.

Apparently it is THE sparrowwinder but due to people using sparrow winder for any sparrow sidewinder hybrid specific details are impossible to find these days, do you know any specs of it?

Nope

Could you elaborate? Honestly, based on what I know, that’s not really the case.

You could just provide a link to the post if this has been discussed before.

Other than max g load I can’t think of anything that it’s really underperforming in

flare resistance

Sources that mention 60g don’t specify whether this is a single plane or not.

Furthermore, overload in a vacuum is of little use; a minimum target engagement range is needed. And the R-73 meets this requirement.

There aren’t any super-good sources on this. There are some relatively indirect references, but frankly, the gaming rocket lives up to them. At least, I haven’t seen any comparative tests that would definitively prove this.

45 g single plane
