Sukhoi Su-27/30/33/35/37 Flanker series & Su-34 Fullback - History, Design, Performance & Dissection

Can’t agree, the MiG 29 had the same upgrade options, but they didn’t come out with the “M” version (9-15) which was the main version of the MiG 29. The 9-12 should be looked at as a MIG 23S. Look at the 9-15 sometime. It was a really interesting piece of work in its day.

Of course you do not without considering the technology.

The nose is smaller. A smaller radar is limited on its field strength (“broadcast strength”). No matter what radar you put into a Mig-29 it will never be as strong as a radar you can place in the nose of a Flanker. A smaller nose is limited to a smaller array poor field of view as well.
They will always suffer in detection & targeting range. As that is literally the case IRL with the oldest Mig-29 & Su-27.

A smaller nose is why the aircraft cannot be equipped with other technologies.
Its literally the reason why the IRST is not upgraded to the Flanker’s

The MiG 29 after introduction is no opponent to the Su 27, the radome was as big as it needed to be. MiG 29M had a modern FbW system, advanced LERX, redesigned fuselage with more fuel. AoA was increased to about 34 ( from 27, Su 27 24 AoA at that time). R-77 from the beginning and and modern cockpit. This was the real MiG 29.

He did not disappear anywhere -organizational issues were resolved after the collapse of the USSR…since 1993…
After the transfer of 1521 air bases in Mary and 18 CBP in Krasnovodsk to the jurisdiction of Turkmenistan, 116 UCBPA was assigned the function of testing practical skills in conducting air combat and using aviation weapons of destruction of all fighter regiments of Russia. Since March 2001, the personnel of the center began to perform combat duty tasks for the country’s air defense. In addition, within the framework of intergovernmental agreements, the staff of the Center helps to hone the combat skills of pilots from friendly Belarus.
Now it is part of the 185 Center of the Russian Aerospace Forces (previously called the 42 Center of the Anti-Aircraft Missile Defense Forces), better known as the “Ashuluk Training Ground”
. Now 116 USBPA of the Air Force and Air Defense are armed with MiG-29SMT(9-19 R) and Su-35S as well as some MiG-35.

No, it was as big as it COULD be. There is a difference.

Small fighters are limited to small radars. Small radars will always & forevermore have smaller arrays & lesser detection/tracking abilities than the larger of same generation. That is a fact & will remain one for the rest of our lives.

Only in WT are the large heavy fighters F-15, F-14, Su-27 all limited in tracking strength to the power small dinky radars found in small aircraft.

The Mig-29’s N019 has the same broadcast strength the Su-27 N001 but has a smaller dish & different transmitter (you can visually see the differences of the transmitter). It has a lesser detection at tracking than the Su-27.

Note: the RWR should show Su-27 not Mig-29. that is a mistake on Gj’s part to assume it’s copy paste.

You need small planes, they’re cheaper, simpler, fly more. Every air force that’s serious and has the money is thinking in a big-small mix, I’ve already written to you. Big, powerful, but more expensive to operate. Smaller, less powerful but cheaper to operate. You need both.
The Soviets, when they could, considered a ratio of about 1:3, One big heavy Su 27 to 3 small light MiG 29. But then it all fell apart and they were forced to pick one.

I did not say anything that would imply they are not needed.

But like all designs, they have limitations. Which all depends on what is design objective & purpose. Whether this purpose is worth the sacrifice of the aspects is on the designer which is well aware of these things.

I think you even said as well along the lines of balance & compromise.

In regard to the small delta multi-role of West Europe & the Nordic nations.
Small delta wings are cheaper to maintain. Delta wings are highly aerodynamic & do not require large powerful engines making it further cheaper to produce. A small size & making them multi-role is produce & operate. Its literally all about cost. They are budget fighters at the end of the day.

All these are awesome but come with sacrifice. That is why the superpower nations have them, but these not the Top Air Superiority fighters.

Both are ideally needed.

Yeah, they are needed if a country is on a tight defense budget.

That is why small nations use them predominately. That is why small Western European nations use small delta canards like the Typhoon, Gripen or the end up buying F-16s.

The typhoon was a fighter developed by multiple small nations that could not afford to develop a fighter on their own, that is a fact. The French & Swedish at least could do this by themselves.

Even Israel decided against using their own 4th generation delta canards they developed themselves in favor of American Air Superiority platforms like the F-15 & developed technologies into their unique F-16s. They sold their 4th+ generation Delta Canard design specs (US helped create) to the Chinese & thus, the J-10 exist.

Small delta fighters are needed entirely out desire of lower cost to produce & maintain. Rather than potential combat capability & projection of power. That is why all of them are now transitioning into the F-35 as their 5th generation answer instead of developing their own.

Not quite so, in the USSR there were five independent types of armed forces (RVSN/ARMY/NAVY/Air Force/ and Air Defense Forces)…In service with the air defense were (1992) _Su-15 /MiG-23M,P,MLD /MiG-31 and 10 regiments on the Su-27 more than in the Air Force…their main difference is the guidance system (the later Western equivalent is the Link-16)…these are very expensive Combined Air Defense systems, as well as the CSTO countries, which the MiG-29 does not have. Also, during the collapse of the USSR, most Air Force regiments remained in the former Soviet Republics and regiments being withdrawn from Europe, and most air defense regiments in Russia…so the choice was obvious.

The comments are there, everyone can see it was within the context of how you described it existing. You literally do it to yourself.

Nah, Leopard

You do it to yourself, no one but you could have perceived that as an emotional response.

Don’t stoop to his level, that’s my job

During the entire existence of NORAD, only the F-106 was a complete analogue of our air defense fighters…,

This post was flagged by the community and is temporarily hidden.

The one with no armor whatsoever on the largest breech and an expensive unreliable engine, all on a platform that must remain sealed with higher than ambient internal pressure to avoid flare back from propellant fumes… Right. Leclerc is second last only to the Challenger 2.

Also political and liquidating for the MiG

The Merkava-4M was considered the best before the latest events (advertising/ratings)…

You’re forgetting politics. It always plays a role in arms procurement. Corruption goes with it, naturally.

Rather, unfair competition and lobbying…The leaders of Sukhoi were close to the Leadership of Russia at that time…

The context of how you described it as existing? This 100% cope.

You are the only one who said this nonsense:

Here, take another loss.

  • The J-20B has existed since 2020 & full serial production has taken place since & confirmed.

  • In December 2022 the J-20B was unveiled with full integration of the WS-15 thrust vectoring engines & confirmed.

  • March 2023 full serial production of the WS-15 thrust vectoring engines began & confirmed.

  • April 5, 2023 Clear images showing the J-20B & the WS-15 engines in flight were released.

Everything has been confirmed officially, by military analyst & defense reporting across multiple sources.
