SPYDER AIO: The Vigilant Arthropod

Today we’re taking a look at the Israeli SPYDER AIO, a rapid-deployment air defense system designed to counter all types of modern aerial threats.

SPYDER AIO: A SAM System (SPAA) for Israel at Rank VIII

At a glance:

  • Python-5 and Derby missiles
  • High-speed radar scanning
  • Effective short and long range air defense
  • Good mobility

Vehicle History

The SPYDER AIO (All-In-One) is an Israeli mobile air defense system jointly developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries to provide rapid, autonomous protection against a wide range of aerial threats, ranging from planes, helicopters to UAVs and even precision-guided munitions. It evolved from the original SPYDER (Surface-to-air Python and Derby) system, which was designed in the early 2000s to meet the needs of modern, mobile, and multi-layered air defense.

The system has attracted interest globally and has since been adopted by the armed forces of several countries including Azerbaijan, the Czech Republic, Ethiopia, Peru, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, the UAE, Morocco and others. The AIO variant integrates all system components — radar, command and control, and missile launchers — onto a single vehicle for enhanced mobility and quicker deployment. The SPYDER AIO was designed to launch both Python-5 and Derby missiles, offering both short and medium-range interception capabilities.

Introducing the SPYDER AIO!

The SPYDER AIO is arriving to War Thunder as part of the Leviathans major update to reinforce the top rank of the Israeli ground forces tree with one of the most advanced air defense systems to date. Featuring a selection of two missile types and a highly capable radar system, the SPYDER is set to become the new guardian angel when playing the Israel ground forces tree. Ready to find out more? Let’s take a look at the details.

In most cases, modern missile-based air defense systems consist of several units with distinct roles, working together. In the case of the SPYDER AIO, Israeli engineers integrated all functions into a single, highly mobile platform, thus creating a highly potent all-in-one solution. The SPYDER’s signature strength lies undoubtedly in its electronic equipment and most prominently, in its advanced radar system. Consisting of a fixed four phased antenna array, the SPYDER can scan the surrounding airspace at smaller intervals. This, coupled with thermal imaging, enables the SPYDER AIO to detect aerial threats well ahead of time and in all weather conditions, before they become an acute danger to allies on the ground.

Detecting a foe is one thing, but dealing with them effectively is a whole different one. Fortunately however, the SPYDER has access to two types of advanced missile systems — the Python-5 and Derby. The Derby will be familiar if you’ve played Israel before, but the Python-5 is brand-new to the game! Each missile system is tailored to a different engagement type, yet both feature fire-and-forget capability, meaning you can focus solely on coordinating the order of engagement of hostile air threats. Both missiles are roughly identical in range, but complement each other in different combat situations. The Derby being an ARH missile is immune to flares and IRCMs, and can also capture targets in the frontal hemisphere from greater ranges. The Python-5 with IR guidance does not trigger RWR (except for the most advanced ones that feature MAWS with optical sensors for detecting rocket engine flares) and are immune to “notching”. Therefore it’s reasonable to fire at targets that pose the biggest threat with both types of missiles at once.

That’s it for this one! The SPYDER AIO will soon become available to all players at the top rank of the Israeli ground forces trees with the release of the Leviathans major update! In the meantime, be sure to keep an eye out on the news for what is coming next. Until then, happy hunting and see you soon in the next devblog!

Please note that this vehicle’s characteristics may be changed before it is added to the game.

Please the Derby lauch from the ground is garbage it’s losing his energy so quick in the dev server he can’t hit a manoeuvring target can we have the Derby ER at least ?

Derby in general is nerfed even in air it has less thrust then the python 4 all tho irl it has more

Not sure if its a typing mistake or just common mixed up designation, but a TM confirmed that the Derby (on the AIO) is an I-Derby (SR) in the bug report site, meaning Improved-Derby. It’s essentially the same but has a better seeker. From what I know AIO never had base Derby.

yes you are right but the problem is not the seeker it’s the range he has no energy and the sypder AIO can take derby ER it will be cool if can have it on this vehicle

We just need the derby and p5 to be fixed derby should have 20 km range its clear on rafael site and p5 should have 12-15km at min

they have it on the game too it’s just they have this range in the best condition you can hit like a helicopter at 20 km with the derby but not a fighter jet going at mach 1 notching that’s why you need a better missile because the derby sr is accruate i think but it’s garbage

Its not accurate after 10km its under mach 1 and also in air it should have 50 km range but u can berly get 40 km shots unless u are high and fast
More so on spyder if rafael says its 20 km it should have min 15km effective range against aircrafts

Cant wait for it to turn out worse at intercepting air targets than Pantsir.

Honestly, seeing all these articles, I am surprised how many modern AA systems are out there at all.

yeah i think Gaijin have done shitty thing with the energy stats of all air to air missile and now they implemented this same missiles on the ground they realized their mistake and don’t know how to correct this

Thats the thing they dont
All of them are hella nerfed and unrealistic so it wont be stronger then pantsir or smt otherwise i dont have good explanation for this bs

On Dev Server :

  • Python 5 has a 2km deadzone, an 8km effective range, and half its actual flight performance.

  • Derby has a 4km deadzone, an 8km effective range, and still 0 explanation why it’s not allowed the 40km I-Derby ER, despite SLM getting the even more dangerous 40km IRIS-T in the same update.

  • Extremely weak ability to intercept anything

So basically, it’s completely DoA, outranged by all CAS at top tier, and will eat every 38MT, Hammer and Mav thrown at it because it’s the size of an apartment complex. Awesome.

Glad we waited years of misery with Machbet and Chaparral for this. Continuing the long standing tradition of unnecessary holding back and artificially nerfing everything in the ISR tree.

Just paint a Pantsir in white and blue UN paint, and stick it in everyone’s lineup like a strike drone at this point. I’m tired, boss.

I have a few issues with the system at the moment.
For starters, please give it the I-Derby ER missiles, giving the system much more range and allowing it to be competitive against standoff munitions. Even if it’s as a modification, it would still really improve the SPAA situation here.
Second, please fix the radar(s), it’s supposed to have 4 separate radars constantly scanning in all directions horizontally and also vertically. As of now it behave as a single radar with incorrect vertical limits. It should be the strongest radar system on a SPAA ingame.
Finally, please continue working on the Python 5. It isn’t preforming quite well off the rail (it doesn’t turn nearly tight enough, nor fast enough, it has simple performance to a thrust vectoring missile mind you) and has an acknowledged wobbling issue that has yet to be fixed.

Yea u see if they do that russia wont be op with its kh38 and its unique pantsir

Vigilant Arthropod that got the dead treatment because Gaijin wont let anything have better range than Pantsiz
