Sea Harrier, Gr Harriers, AV-8A/AV-8C, and AV-8S discussion about flight performance

Here is the cover and description of the test and all that it entails.

I always thought that light blue color on cover was just marvellous.

It is pretty and “official” yk. But that’s the full description for anyone wondering.

Thank you very much. Can you also add pages 2 and 3 - from the beginning?

Yes looks like they didn’t send/load lol. Here they are.

Was looking at a page shared with me. The page is from the “Harrier tactics manual: 2nd edition” and is available from the national archives. Second after that is the ACM data regarding the Gr.3.

The first doc is of terrible quality but we can see the ITR line compared to nozzles down for different Mach numbers. If we refer to the V-N diagram at .6 Mach (400 knots almost exactly) the wing lift load achievable is 5.5G. 5.5G at 400 knots is 15 degrees a second ITR. if you add .5 G and bring it to 6G it is than 17 degrees a second.

If my guess is correct than the distance between the solid line and dotted line at .6 Mach would represent .5G. Meaning well over 1G lift can be gained from VIFF at lower speeds.

ITR (with my guesstimate was tested at 400 knots with a weight of 17,090, 2xgun pods, 2xAIM9G)

This leads me to believe that STR of 13 degrees a second is also from this configuration and at a speed of 400 knots.

Combat configuration 10 also likely confirms this as its configuration and weight are near identical if you remove the 2 extra pylons.

Gaijin currently has the Harrier configured to sustain 13 degrees a second with 50% fuel and no stores with 100% throttle.

The devs mentioned that RCS is functioning properly but I doubt it. Luckily I have the RCS control data.

If anyone feels like testing to help out that would be great.

1 rad/s = 57.296 degrees/s

How about this gaijin. From an old publication during the kestrel days. The OG harrier with the weakest engine of them all was said to do 630 on the deck. As well as the AV-8A manual having a sea level cruise speed of Vmax. We know sea level Vmax to be really close to 620 knots with the airframe maximum airspeed chart. (Meaning highest safe airspeed for any maneuvers)

Hopefully that answered any questions.

More info regarding VIFF and flaps for you all. This is direct from the Sea Harrier frs.1 aircrew manual.

VIFF will create pitch rates in the order of 10 degrees/s at 200 knots and 30 degrees/s at 90 knots. The harrier currently can hold about 8 degrees a second at 200 knots so VIFFing to 30degrees should give an ITR of 18 degrees a second at this speed.

Mid flap setting has negligible effect on speed up to 400 knots.

At 400 knots mid flap setting will add another .5g to max G. With mid flaps and VIFF adding another .5g you can see ITR go up to a good 20 degrees a second at 400 knots.

Along with this we have a specified temp for max thrust setting we know max thrust setting will give the harrier 11 degrees a second STR. But it should hit this performance mark with a cool engine at only 610 to a max of 650 degrees.

Another crappy TTS video about VIFF and what the devs said about it.

All Harrier take significantly too long to reach high speeds. All Harriers time to speed significantly too slow // Gaijin.net // Issues

Over half a minute too long to reach Mach .9 from a 200 knot start.

lets see where this goes. Probably too busy making auction crap rather then fixing bugs. Like you (and the papers state)1 degree per second less then a FULL AFTER BURNING MiG21! Ofc this is modeled wrong in game, along with the MiG29 (9.12 and SMT)

hey found something interesting the av-8a can carry aim 9H

It can carry B,D,G, and H sidewinders actually. (I have the 01-AV8A-75 weapons stores and loading manual)

The entire manual?

if its 252 pages yea, its publically available on the internet archive lol

Yes if they where modeled correctly and VIFF actually worked even 4th gen fighters would get smoked in low altitude sub sonic dogfights.
