SE.203 Aquilon thread

Should the Aquilon 203 have the AN/APQ-94 radar instead of the AN/APQ-65? The suggestion that was made for it suggests so: SE 203 Aquilon, the French modification of the Sea Venom.

The AN/APQ-94 resembles the AN/APQ-104 found on the F-8E(FN), as the 104 was upgraded from the 94 to be compatible with the Matra R530 missiles: AN/APQ-104 - Radartutorial

Support comment.

Also I would suggest to place this vehicle below Vautour IIN as it is a naval aircraft, should be placed at the naval line.

well the suggestion seems to imply that only the se202 had the an/apq-65 so I think thatd be good to get if true

yes please...

As the author of the suggestion, I just checked deeper on the topic of the radar, and it looks like the AN/APQ-94 was considered but that in the end the AN/APQ-65 was the one used on the SE 203 according to the most reliable sources. The mentions of the AN/APQ-94 seem to come only from non french sources. So I probably made a mistake in the suggestion that Gajin corrected.

On the other hand, I see no reason to not place the Aquilon before the Vautour IIN, just as you do. Its primary role was to serve as the French Navy’s carrier-based fighter, not as an attacker. It should therefore be positioned in the tree that way, in the same line of its direct successor: F-8E(FN).

This would be the opportunity to switch places between the F-100D and the Alpha Jet E in the french tech tree aswell, respectively a fighter in the attacker line and an attacker in the fighter line… Moreover it seems logical to me for the super saber to be after an other sabre and before the F-8 which is literally based on the F-100. The french (dutch) sea fury also needs to be moved in the benelux line of the tech tree.

Do not hesitate to support these overdue changes to the tech tree positioning while we are at it ;)

I see, thank you for the update!

Do you know when the missile capability was introduced to the aircraft?

Sources regarding the use of this missile on the Aquilon are scarce, but it appears that the missile was selected for this platform in 1958 and subsequently tested and gradually deployed.

Sucks that it’s a higher rating just for 2 very early missiles but oh well

Those AA nords will absolutely slab in head ons and will generally be very useful for people who got the hang of them. I honestly wouldn’t even be too surprised if it goes even higher in br.

Well it’s a more competent weapon than people think but I wouldn’t call it way better than 9b. It’s better at picking off someone occupied but engaging someone close it’s worse cause unless you have some ridiculousy impressive binds you can’t maneuver while controlling it. Its usefulness falls off somewhat vs anyone who’s gone vs one and can react decently fast

Usually no plane gets a higher rating for 2 aim9b along unless it gets better engine or something else, which is my issue. Supposedly the plane even has a slgihtly weaker engine but it has a single instead of dual cockpit which helps this a little
