SAAF JAS-39C Technical Data and Discussion

I think the reason they are against it is because it would be unfair and hard to balance. Don’t get me wrong the Gripens deserve their Mk.IV radar and the SAAF model its Mk.III but if they did that they’d have to essentially undo and make a different HUD for the SAAF Gripen as its the only nation to be unable to upgrade their Gripens from 2006 due to financial problems. In 2018 SAAB sent one of their directors to SA to try to get them to purchase MS20 but their financial problems were so bad that most of the Gripen Fleet were grounded regardless of 3rd party help to make cheap alternative fixes to the SAAF Gripens. In 2020 SAAB took a contract to help SAAF repair and upgrade their gripens to be a bit more modern but not MS20.

Overall its just not in gaijins interest and trust I’ve talked to Smin a lot on this topic. And i mean a lot.

We have Gripen C’s which are using a radar they never had since they never used the A’s radar. We have a Gripen A with weight it never got as it never received the in flight refueling probe. So many problems are ignored.

Tbh I wouldn’t be mad if the SAAF Gripen was only made to the MS18 standard and the others getting later versions now that the Brits have the EF2000. Can’t remember if Thailand have done the MS20 upgrade yet but Sweden and Hungary have.

Thailand is MS20 capable, its one reason they pushed for the Gripen E because they liked the C models. SAAF Gripen C is a MS19 Model, no offical primary sources but a lot of secondary sources claim they are MS19, they have HMD and IRIS-T so they would need to be MS19.

I have a bug report to get the Gripen identified by their MS but no mods have looked at it even when messaging them oh well.

Given the time from when the SAAF purchased and had the Gripen arrive we can guess their model additionally SAAB has no records of them being brought to MS20 standard unlike every other nation with Gripens.

Hm, i will look into this starting from next week and either make a new bug report or a whole new suggestion. I have ordered more books than what i originally have on the Gripen so i will use multiple sources but any specific sources about the MS upgrades would be welcome. I know that some MS upgrades even have blocks in them so i think the best way to go is a whole new suggestion and ping some moderators to look at it.

Will start with this next week.

Well feel free to use the few sources i have listed from my bug report. You can also check SAAB for trade deals for stuff like the Hungarian MS20 one i have in my list. Could help find what nations had MLU 19 and 20 models.

Only MS version with blocks is MS20 from what I’ve found, could be wrong though. The MS 20 Block 1 we got in Sweden around 2015-2016 I know had the MK3 improved radar and the MS20 Block 2 that I think we are on now and also which the Hungarians and Czechs got two or three years later I think has the MK4 radar (non AESA variant). MS20 Block 3 I am not sure when it is implemented, could be what we are on now in Sweden idk, could also come somewhere in a year ig. From what I understand MS20 Block 4 is going to be implemented around 2027-2028. Could very well be wrong here and that 2027-2028 is for MS20 Block 3.

This is my understanding also and from what i have heard.

Yeah, i don’t know of earlier blocks on the MS outside of the MS20. I could always email SAAB again but of the like 6 emails ive sent ive had 1 reply lol

ESTL uses the same interface as AIM-9 and AIM-120 so should be able to be mounted on any of those pylons:

TBF i haven’t seen it mounted on any older Gripens so idk if they need to connect to the pod or if the pod handles everything by itself.

I think they need to connect at least to some degree.
I don’t know how they work for each specific country but they can even be controlled wirelessly:

That my thing, MS20 and MS19 added systems that allowed for the vehicle to actually use weapons that needed to be linked and mounted to the pylons, i assumed ESTL worked in the same way and given the pods age to me at least i doubt something like a late 2012 Gripen A could use a ESTL pod or early MS18 Gripen C.

Sounds reasonable :)

I could be wrong and would love to honestly know but im just using age and other examples to try and rationalize it. To be honest i dont think we will ever see a Gripen C with an ESTL pod but maybe one day…

i really think Gajin doesn’t care about these levels of specifics look at the Mirage 2000, Rafale and the Eurofighter

More like they didn’t care about the Gripen from the beginning. The A isnt the A and the C isnt even the C. The gripens currently are entirely fictional with the current implementation.

Hey people ! I’ve been wondering lately why does the canards move up on the gripen ?

Afaik, they should move downward from time to time, especially at high AoA, yet they don’t.

What do you mean?

Mate, Gaijin doesn’t fix minor nations: they nerd them until they’re unusable so we are forced to play the Big Three (paychecks): Germany, US, and Russia

Gripen’s canards irl go downward when you pull AoA, meanwhile in the game they constantly go up like an elevator
