they are making a claim that they managed to score a hit with a missile from longer range than any they knew of, which means it must be a longer range than other US missile tests such as those of the AIM-54
additionally this shot was made on a subsonic target as opposed to many AIM-54 tests being made on supersonic targets
I never said their range was equal to those, only that the AIM-120D is also in the ~200km maximum range class
In absolutely ideal launch conditions, compared to standard combat launch parameters of which it’ll be 40-60km less capable, AIM-120D is a 150km missile tops when you aren’t launching at mach 2 with an otherwise empty airframe against a target drone
I am mentally ready for them to model that (if at all) in the stupidest way possible, like copy & paste spyder’s radar (360 with 4 separate beams doing circles). Might as well.
Pure range is only ideal against a target that isnt doing anything, the more impressive attribute is typically a missiles LSZ. Which for something like the Meteor is 100km+
when many other long range missile shots are against cooperative supersonic targets
also AIM-120D has a dual pulse motor (recently saw a decent source for this) as such it will still have a lot of energy when the target gets warnings on their RWR/MAWS
Did the USAF statement claim that the test shots from AMRAAM were the longest ranged shots ever done (therefore beating AIM-54) or just that the shots were the longest that the missile itself had ever done?
they told us what platform it was launched from and what the target was, that is already a lot of information as it gives us best possible launch parameters
Well I just don’t care or believe you then, i’d rather go with the fact that foreign missiles have killed at over 200km, which is longer than anything in the US arsenal currently
And yet that statement is true, regardless of what you feel or think about it.
We have meteor with 100ish km
We have the russian one with I dont remember exactly how much, but there are fair number floating around.
And aim260? Shall we just eyeball it to say 150? or maybe 250? or maybe 80? Why not be optimistic with 300? What do we do? What do you propose?
Whining into the void is no better than pointing at incredibility.
