Background/History

The Project 68U2 class light cruiser was one of two Soviet Project 68 Bis class cruisers which in the early 1970’s were converted into command cruisers of two separate modification, the ship which would receive the conversion into the Project 68U2 was the Admiral Senyavin which was laid down in 1951, launched in 1952, and commissioned in 1954, both would receive different modifications with Zhdanov receiving the Project 68U1 Bukhta-1 modernization and Admiral Senyavin receiving the Project 68U2 Bukhta-2 modernization.

The conversion saw both ships see their main armament reduced with Zhdanov having her super firing rear turret removed and Admiral Senyavin would see both of her rear turrets removed and in exchange they both also saw the installation of twin 30mm gun turrets with the former getting 4 and the latter receiving 8, additionally both vessels saw the installation of a twin arm sam launcher of their rears, as Admiral Senyavin had both rear turrets removed as she saw the installation of a helipad and a hanger at the rear, this feature was not present on Zhdanov.

Following the conversion both ships would remain in service until the latter half of the 1980’s with both ships only being scrapped after the Cold War in 1991 and 1992 respectively.
