What are the chances the tornado flight models will be changed/improved upon the arrival of the next update?

I recently got both the F.3 and F.3 late and whilst I adore them, the flight model is horrendous. I know its not supposed to be great IRL and is essentially a brick with wings, and yet what I feel in game is like its a brick with wings, but entirely made of tungsten.

I went in expecting similar performance to the phantom and am now left with confusing trauma. Sorry for sad posting, just wondering what people with more experience on Tornado topics might have to say on this.

Slim to none.

Last word was that “Game limitations” prevent it from being fixed any further and they will not be doing any more development for it, so I was planning on a quick poke maybe this time next year (2 years after the new FM) and see if anything has changed.

Trust me, a LOT better than it was.

They cant be flown like a Phatnom, they do hold some advantages however, like the superior radar and RWR and in theory, better CM count. And the Skyflash SuperTEMPS are very good for 12.0.

So its all about how you fly it. I also highly recommend it in SB, its hella fun.

The buffs im hoping for currently:

F3:

  • BOL overhaul
  • Maybe 1x Phimat in place of an Aim-9L
  • Dechirped Aim-9Ls
  • Hindenburg Fuel tanks
  • combat thrust

F3 Late:

  • BOL overhaul
  • 1-2 Phimat pods (Extra mounting, fuel tanks and/or in place of an Aim-9)
  • Aim-9M lock range buffs
  • Maybe Aim-120C5s when appropriate
  • (would love ASRAAM, but the BR would probably increase too much, but we’ll have to see how they are modeled)
  • Combat thrust
  • (and from an ASB perspective, a 13.3 bracket or a 13.0 BR)

Baller answer, thank you.
Sad that we probably wont see any FM changes but on the bright side the radar is pretty damn nice, perhaps my favourite in the game as of now.

I do have some questions regarding the buffs you’re hoping for, sorry if its annoying I just literally know nothing about the Tornado or F.3s in particular, the most I know is some stuff from the F.3 Operation Granby post. What do you mean by BOL overhaul and Combat Thrust?

personally idk about combat thrust, but BOL overhaul means using actual full sized flares rather than the shitty “small flares” used currently by all BOL pods which are worse at confusing IR missiles

BOL is currently modeled very very poorly

BOL is currently modeled like normal flares but much smaller. They should instead produce a cloud of IR material that would be as strong, if not maybe stronger than a large calibre flare, you can see what it looks like in this video:

The downside of BOL is the short burn time, which is why you have loads. Even just restoring them to be 1 for 1 a normal flare strength with a shorter burn time though would be a major buff,

As for Chaff, they have 1/4 the mass they probably should have and so you need spam loads of the damn things to defeat anything.

Fixing BOL or at the very least restoring them to what they were like before the nerfs would be a major buff for a lot of our aircraft, including the F3.

You can read the full reports here:

Combat thrust is currently missing from every aircraft except the Mig-21BIS and would give any and all aircraft with it an extra boost in terms of speed/acceleration for a limited duration. It is hoped that the Combat thrust could be slightly overtuned on the F3 to compensate the current inaccurate drag that hurts it’s top speed

Ah, I’m getting flashbacks to all the times I’ve died in the Gripen, Gr.7 and F.3 from missiles I believed were totally not going to hit me. Here’s hoping it gets changed, Thank you again, you’ve genuinely been a great help.

Yep, exactly the problem, Typhoon is semi-affected too.

and your welcome

I dont see any issues with having ASRAAM at 11.3. Definetly time for a bug report :P

not op at all :)

@Morvran What stops the Tornado from being maneuverable? Wasn’t the point of swing wing to be effective in CQC and High/Fast Combat? I know it’s an attack aircraft but it feels really bad rn.

With regard to ingame. Its FM is essentially an unfinished placeholder that is underperforming in terms of ITR, but slightly overperforming in STR iirc. But its also got too much drag and so isnt as fast as it should be. (engines too should have an extra thrust setting)

As for it not being an exceptional dogfighter IRL. Im not sure, I think largely because it was designed with low alt interdiction in mind, not high alt interception. The engines werent optimised iirc for higher alts and so it struggled with gaining and maintain speed when up high. Needed full afterburner to keep up with a Sea Harrier at 30k ft iirc. Its entire design was based around sitting at 300ft in all weather.

Variable geometry wing just means it was able to get airbourne with a bigger bomb load and still enable higher speeds. I think.

On a Tornado GR.1 and 2 of them?
Nah not really Tonka is an overtiered boat.

Yes and yes. Yeah, I think its reasonable for the BR :P

This is quite an interesting air display video of a GR.1

Let’s also not forget that combat thrust is a vague term, and as an example the viggens use their third or maximum afterburner stage in game

I still wonder when Tornado GR.4 and Tornado F.3/Late will receive BOL therapy in the modification menu, just like Typhoon FGR.4 does.

Unlocking two~three modifications for full CW potential feels bullshit.
Chaff->BOL
Chaff->BOL->MAW

Especially when Tonka ADV can access 32LCM only on stock.

Coughs in a10c with 9m’s at 11.3…

I think the ASRAAM is just a bit better than the 9M lol
