The MiG-29UB-R 9.53R is a multirole trainer made by the Mikoyan bureau as a trainer version of the MiG-29SMT with it being referred to as “MiG-29UB upgraded” with it featuring the same avionics, structure and identical cockpit data display but with the Zhuk radar removed. With it sharing the same weapons systems as the SMT except for the ability to use radar guided weapons due to the lack of a onboard radar.
Additionally the R model meaning its for the Russian air force has received additional upgrades compared to earlier 9.53 models used by export customers with it receiving the L-150M-02 RWR/ELNIT set instead of the old SPO-15 and a extra countermeasure set mounted next to the engines.

The MiG-29UB-R 9.53Rs story starts in 2015 with the Russian air force putting down an order for 2 9.53Rs this order was intended to compliment the 16 MiG-29SMT 9.19R the Russian air force had purchased last year in 2014. Like the 9.19R these would be fully tailored to the specifications of the Russian air force, unlike the earlier 9.53s the Russian air force operate which are in fact just ex Algerian 9.53s which was returned to RSK MiG after the MiG-29SMT scandal in Algeria and later taken over by the Russian air force in 2009.
The brand new 9.53R would be designed with the same upgrades as the 9.19R which included the installation of the L-150M-02 RWR/ELNIT set and 2x UV-05 countermeasure sets mounted next to the engines. With an ex Algerian 9.53 being used as a test unit at the 929th state flight test center receiving the new L-150M-02 RWR/ELNIT set and 2x UV-05 countermeasure sets before the new 9.53Rs would be built.
With the first example built being blue 50 starting its flight testing in October 2015 and being delivered later to the 116th UTsBP Combat proficiency training center at Privolzhisky air base in the Astrakhan region, a subdivision of the 185th TsBP combat training & combat operations center. With the final UB-R being delivered in December the same year with it being assigned to the same unit and airbase.
