Aircraft history:
Spoiler
The need for a carrier capable multi role fighter started with the development of the project 1143.5-class aircraft carriers and would lead to the development of the MiG-29K (9.31) which would eventually have its program cancelled due to the collapse of the Soviet Union. The program for a carrier capable MiG-29 would eventually be revived in the future with the Indian navy needing a carrier capable after the Indian government had purchased the Russian navy’s deactivated Admiral Gorshkov carrier and it would be refurbished and renamed to the INS Vikramaditya. The Mikoyan bureau would offer them the initial 9.31 variant but it was deemed unacceptable and in need for upgrading, it would lead to the development of the MiG-29K 9.41 which would be chosen as their primary fighter for the INS Vikramaditya air wings. In 2012 the Russian navy would place an initial order of 24 medium-heavy multi-role combat aircraft of the MiG-29KR 9.41R/KUBR 9.47R to replace their aging fleet of Su-33s which had their technical life span set to expire in 2015. The Russian variants would differ from the initial 9.41/9.47 variants with the usage of more domestic Russian electronics and be designated MiG-29KR 9.41R for the single seater and MiG-29KUBR 9.47R for the twin seater variant. On October 15th the first production variants of the 9.41R and 9.47R would take to the skies for the first time, and would be accepted for service officially in November 2013 with the first four production variants.
