Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-29 Fulcrum - History, Design, Performance & Dissection

Yes not even the MiG-29G manual mentions the R27ER anywhere - only the R27R1

And thats an upgraded version of the Fulcrum.

The first fulcrum capable of actually using the ER/ET models was the MiG-29M 9.15 on the center pylons

ah sorry mb i somehow thought you were talking about R-60M

you are probably right but iirc germany never used/had r27et/er.

Only MiG-29s that can actually operate the ER are the MiG-29Ms, MiG-29SMT and MiG-35

(on the MiG-29K I would assume it can use it since it has the same WCS as the MiG-29M - but since I do not have clear info on that imma not include that for now lol)

i also heard that the Mig-29S (9.13S) is able to carry the ER/ET

dont have more than hearsay tho

S, as well as SE according to their manual

what is the SE?

Export S with some worse stuff

is there a difference between the s and the bm models? they seem the same to me

Tbh I barely know anything about other, lesser known variants, however the SE does have an export N019M iirc

Without getting too off topic, the actual fighter variants of the MiG-23 have a better combat record than the MiG-29 if I recall correctly.

@Surbaissemaxxing hopefully a comparison between the combat record of the MiG-29 and it’s predecessor isn’t too far off topic. I’ll leave it at this, if that is the case.

i always find it weird when people compare the MiG-29 combat record to anything.

Like this thing was barely used in any wars in its actual timeframe of production - thanks to being the poor mans 4th gen.
Most if not all of its combat is 20 years after it has been made - almost always with little to no upgrades from the original 9.12 model.

The combat record is just kinda unreliable for the fulcrum because essentially only the 1980 versions saw actual combat - but in airspaces of the 2000s

actually downgraded models like 9.12B or 9.12A

Americans like to pat themselves on the back for seal clubbing ancient soviet planes in the desert wars with state of the art planes and AWACS backing them up. Haven’t fought on parity with anyone since like vietnam.

Did the Russian VVS ever adopt the 9-18 SMT variant without the tumor fuel tank or was it designed as an export model only?

it got slapped around by 27sks irl which were of the same time period, with the 27s entering service only 2 years after mig 29a 912

No, every MiG-29 is able to utilize R-27Es, with how the MiG-29 WCS works, a maintenance or technical crew, could simply put in the R-27E extra circuit board to display the name and the ranges on the HUD, this is for the 9.12.
While the 9.12G doesn’t have it in the manual because the DDR never got them.
9.13 got R-27E from the factory.
You don’t see many MiG-29s, especially 9.12s with R-27Es because they were usually left for the Su-27s.

The IAF said this, the Luftwaffe said that, India said something else… but where are the glowing praises for the MiG-29 from those who bought it and used it in combat? Where are the hymns of praise from Yugoslavia, Iraq, and so on? Over Africa, the Su-27 completely dominated the MiG-29. And really, what’s there to discuss? If my memory serves me right, the MiG-29 doesn’t have a single confirmed air victory

you mean the countries that didnt had the r-73 or were fighting 10 years newer tech with their Mig-29 9.12

no shit the fighter designed to do the job of the mig-29 but better, does it better

Under Soviet classification and doctrine, the MiG-29 was an outdated frontline fighter, while the Su-27 was an air superiority aircraft with secondary interceptor capabilities. These aircraft aren’t even remotely similar in concept or role because the MiG-29 wasn’t developed as a partner to the Su-27, but as a competitor, designed to save face for the Mikoyan Design Bureau. The result? The Su-27 and its massive production run became one of the best 4th-gen fighters, while the MiG-29 is only bought by those who need somethinganything better than a MiG-21
