Infantry could very well be the beginning of the end for War Thunder. As a longtime player with thousands of hours, hundreds of USD spent, a special attachment to this game, and among many of the same, I say: NO to infantry.
There are countless FPS titles out there, a large proportion of which already combine infantry with tanks and aircraft. There is no shortage of realistic games which provide exactly this kind of gameplay, just only with less realistic vehicles. The best example is Enlisted, managed by Gaijin itself, and developed by an extremely related company.
War Thunder players play this game because they like tanks, planes, helicopters, and ships. War Thunder is incredibly unique for such factors including the aforementioned, historical accuracy, and realism. Not for infantry of any kind! One of the reasons which people play this game is specifically for realistic warfare WITHOUT infantry. Sure, some WT players like the idea of an infantry mode, but the majority would be alienated by such a development, or wouldn’t care for it at all.
I am tremendously thankful that infantry won’t be coming to any of the current War Thunder game modes, but that’s literally the worst case scenario. What will happen as a result of this development will still undeniably be negative for War Thunder as a whole. What can change is how bad it will be. Effort, money, and time invested in this infantry mode will be inversely proportional to War Thunder’s success and future existence as we know it. The less Gaijin diverts to this irrelevant nonsense, the better off it and the community will be.
Development effort and time will be diverted from current player needs. Players and player activity will be split into even smaller fragments between modes (causing high queue times, therefore slowing or even reversing decompression and balance improvement). New vehicles, maps, and features? Expect falling numbers every update. Bug fixes and historical inaccuracies? Many are already ignored for years, but it appears even this could get worse. Work on updating current gamemodes, or new modes with actual player support (ARB EC, tank-only GRB)? Forget about it entirely.
And no, War Thunder player population won’t increase dramatically from the addition of infantry. If anything, the number of players in the current gamemodes will stagnate and slowly drop off. The market for FPS games is already saturated, profits from current players will fall, and Gaijin management, known for their ignorance towards players, won’t succeed in making the new mode good anyways. This is a massive gamble that Gaijin is taking (should I mention, without any player agreement or input), and given the conditions, such a misstep scarcely succeeds.
Every single aspect of the game you can think about will be adversely impacted. We can only hope that the impact will be minimal; the fate of War Thunder depends on it.
