Introduction to the J-10A
The J-10A is a third-generation, single-engine multirole fighter aircraft developed by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group (CAC), a subsidiary of the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC). It entered formal service in 2004. The early production batches (2004–2008) were the initial mass-produced variants of the J-10 series, primarily tasked with replacing aging Chinese Air Force aircraft such as the J-7 and J-8II, focusing on air superiority missions.
Modernization and Subsequent Production Batches
To enhance the combat capabilities and extend the service life of early J-10A units, the Chinese Air Force initiated modernization upgrades for over 200 J-10A fighters starting in the 2010s. Later production batches of the J-10A were also built to this upgraded standard (often unofficially referred to as the J-10A+ or J-10A MLU, though the official designation remains J-10A). Key improvements include avionics systems, weapon compatibility, electronic warfare capabilities, and propulsion systems.
Major Upgrades
Avionics Systems
- Radar Upgrade: Installation of the JKL-24 Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) Radar.
- Detection range:
- Against typical fighter targets (RCS=5 m²): 200–220 km (head-on mode).
- Against stealth targets (RCS=0.1 m²): 70–90 km (optimized mode).
- Tracking and engagement:
- Simultaneously track 30+ targets and guide missiles against 6–8 high-priority targets.
- Multi-mode support:
- Air-to-air, air-to-ground, and air-to-sea modes.
- Integrated Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging, Ground Moving Target Indication (GMTI), and Electronic Countermeasures (ECM).
- Detection range:
- Mission Computer and Data Link:
- Equipped with high-speed data links and an open-architecture mission computer.
- Enables real-time information sharing with AWACS and ground command systems.

Electronic Warfare Systems
- New Electronic Countermeasure (ECM) Pods and Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS) added to enhance battlefield survivability.
Weapon Compatibility
- Capable of carrying PL-15 long-range air-to-air missiles and PL-10E infrared imaging-guided close-combat missiles.
Through incremental upgrades, the J-10A can also deploy air-to-surface missiles such as CM-502KG, CM-704KG, KD-88, and YJ-91, as well as precision-guided bombs like the Lei Shi-6 (LS-6), LS-500J, and FT series, granting it precision strike capabilities against tactical targets, ships, and radar installations. While the multirole upgrades reflect the PLA Air Force’s “one aircraft, multiple roles” development philosophy, only CM-502KG, CM-704KG, and KD-88 air-to-surface missiles are recommended for in-game balancing purposes. If anti-radiation missiles are added to the game in the future, the YJ-91 supersonic anti-radiation/anti-ship missile could be included.

Propulsion System
- Select upgraded batches feature the domestically produced WS-10B turbofan engine, with thrust increased to approximately 14 tons and reliability superior to the earlier Russian AL-31FN engines.
Exterior Changes
- Vertical Stabilizer Tip: Equipped with a navigation antenna identical to those on the J-10B/C and JF-17 Thunder.
- VHF/UHF Antenna: Replaced with the same model used on the JF-17 Thunder to improve stable communication in adverse weather.
- Cockpit Upgrades: Minor enhancements such as improved countermeasure dispenser systems, influenced by design experience and feedback from the JF-17 program.
