After World War II, Italy rebuilt its Air Force with NATO support. In the early 1950s, Italy received Republic F-84G Thunderjets from the United States under the Mutual Defense Assistance Program. These jet fighters were the first Italian aircraft capable of delivering nuclear weapons. They served mainly with the Aeronautica Militare until the late 1950s, playing a key role in modernizing Italy’s air capabilities and strengthening NATO’s southern flank.
Some particular F84G that were given to the Aeronautica Militare were previously used in the USAF on arctic bases with a camo that was made to highlight the plane in case of a crash in the snowy environment.
These planes weren’t repainted but they were left as they were, covering any american marking (it has 6 national insignas) and printing the serial on the front of the plane, as of italian tradition.
