The main defense within 20km is hiding from the radar before the IR seeker picks you up. If the radar fails to pick you up even once before the IR seeker engages, the missile stops guiding towards you. Even if you get picked back up again by the radar with the missile still in flight, it won’t be redirected towards your new track even though it’s of the exact same type in exactly the right location.
I haven’t seen if chaff still affects it, though. In the previous dev chaffing was enough to get the track to detach from you.
Yup still like 15–25% off what should perform like but compared to the old Gaijin creature they named it SLM? This thing’s practically a masterpiece

9km is most definitely not the IRIS-Ts kinematic range limit.
Its pretty annoying that the only DL munition in-game that can reacquire targets is still the R-27ER
It really shouldnt, the AESA should just assign separate beams to the chaff and the aircraft when the chaff is released, allowing the tracking of the aircraft to continue, and probably drop the chaff contact since its not a valid target.
Theres no reason an AESA radar should get fooled by chaff when it can literally just continue both tracks (and many more) simultaneously…
Don’t forget the IRIS-T SL has the aero covering on the seeker. No idea how far from the target that drops IRL.
From some further testing it did seem like if you just fly around with your flares and chaff set to one second interval drops, at a range of about 15-20km, the IRIS-T SLM has a terrible time actually getting its missiles to go for your plane rather than the countermeasures. I’m not sure how the other new SAMs act, but they seemed too short-ranged to reach me in the first place.
sadly, The SLM is still struggles to hit even slower targets like the ASM-250 yet somehow can track Mach 2 targets like the Kh-38 inconsistently. Sometimes it just misses completely, even when it’s flying directly toward the target. This smells like an IR seeker issue possibly a bug or flawed logic in the tracking code
Another major problem the SLM refuses to pull more than 25G even when it has the speed (Mach 2+) and energy to do more This G-limit is crippling It explains a lot of the misses especially on manoeuvring targets where other missiles (with less energy) still connect
This needs real fixing not balancing for fun or arbitrary caps Fix the IR logic and remove whatever hard coded G limiter is holding it back Otherwise the missile’s design potential is wasted
Aero cover remains on the missile until a predetermined range (not the seeker max range) to improve aerodynamics and down range performance

Aero cover is jettisoned as max seeker range but datalink is maintained until target lost or missile impact (max guidance strength, the target would effectively be trying to defeat a IIR/ARH dual-mode seeker)
We have to remember that the IRIS-T SLM is stated to have 40km effective range irl. Assuming that to be the case, a 25km lock (stated range limit of the air launched IRIS-T, and therefore what im using as the estimate for the seekers max lock range) is well after the missile has stopped burning, and only occurs once the missile has climbed into thinner air where the drag would be highest
Sounds like the TRML-4D is too susceptible to chaff, and the IRIS-T remains too susceptible to flares :/
holy AoA on this thing is wild Maybe that’s the whole issue maybe they don’t want the missile spinning out if it hits 40G instantly That would explain why it can pull AoA but doesn’t seem to pull the G it should
Another certified War Thunder classic that seems to happen to the SLM is the track moving to any munitions dropped by the targeted aircraft. It’s something that also happens to the Pantsir, and seems to be a downside of TWS type track radars in War Thunder.
That also looks like a consequence from the hardcoded “vertical-to-horizontal-to-loft/target approach”. After reaching horizontal flight it tries to correct its flight path which wasn’t correct to begin with by all means nessecary.
