As general information:
A crew can’t collect points for ace level, if it hasn’t been experted before. So if you don’t buy expert, you will not get ace. If you have no expert crew yet, all your previous income is wasted for ace skill. That is one reason why I expert crews: Over the years, they turn gold.
While it is no problem to expert your rank I and II crews on all crew slots if needed (very cheap), you should plan ahead for everything rank III and up. Expert costs as much as the vehicle itself. You don’t want to expert a vehicle on many crews unless you want to pass it around on purpose. The reason why I do it is that it is aced on a lvl 75/100/150 crew. Further missions would waste the crew skill, so I move the (talisman/premium) vehicle to another green crew and let it grow there. If you don’t plan to play tanks and ships, you can move it as soon as you have reached 75.
If you grind slowly, you will be able to expert your new planes. Don’t waste money on crew skill, it will come if you don’t rush.

Why even bother saying to play rank II then?
It’s not much more work to get to rank III and also with rank II you won’t make any real progress towards the BP.
Rank II is fun
Nothing stopping you from playing it.
I just pointed out that they were saying to grind the battle pass for the free premium and you cannot do that with rank II
