HL 108 and HL 120 TR / TRM Engine Performance

Top speed is with 2800 RPM with the Pz III, i dont know for the Pz IV, however with Pz III its just sayed with the last 2 gears to not go over 40 km/h and use it as Schongänge (Low Wear Gears). I assume its with the Pz IV similar. So the RPM to top speed in game is wrong anyway.

Found a new source: 2800 RPM / 285 PS (HL 120) and 250 PS (HL 108)
RPM for the speeds is not given, however cince 2800 RPM is given as the number at the top, i assume they chose it, for the specific gear speeds.

So, could with the known gearing the top speeds be calculated based on an extended RPM of 3300 RPM for the Pz III and IV (except the H and J, since they possibly recived new lower gearing, which i dont know iirc.)?

The StuG III and StuH 42 are also currently limited to the soft road speed of 40 km/h which was just to lower wear and not even governed.

Overall iirc the top speeds for the Pz IV and more in game are for 2800 RPM, while the engine in game is already working at 3000 RPM constantly.

If you can prove it that the top speeds are for 2800 RPM, yes. And the math is fairly simple too, all you have to is this:

Current\ top\ speed\times\frac{Maximum\ RPM}{2800}

Ty, so the Pz III Ausf.B Top speed would increase from 35,2 km/h at 2800 RPM to 41,5 km/h at 3300 RPM.
Pz III Ausf.E and F are at 71 km/h, which is for 3000 RPM, and with 3300 RPM to 79,04 km/h, with originally 67,07 km/h at 2800 RPM.

Pz III Ausf.J - N are at 53 km/h, which i dont know, is there another way for calculating, without the top speed, as the highes given speed is simply 40 km/h, which isnt the top speed either way. Otherwise still taking the 40 km/h its 47,15 km/h. With 53 km/h, its 62,46 km/h but that sounds unrealisitic, since its the SSG 77, which is practically a SSG 76 form the Pz IV. However different final drives…
Or turning around the numbers 53*2800/3000=49,46 km/h, which taken as base then goes to 58,29 km/h

For Pz IV Ausf.C - F2 it will be 49,5 km/h.
G 47,14 km/h
H and J 45,96 km/h

Same will apply to StuG III and StuH 42 and Jagdpanzer IV and such.

And the 8,8 cm Flak 37 Sfl. which uses the same HL 108 engine goes from 40 km/h 2600 RPM to 50 km/h, which is even suppored by the

Sd.Kfz.9 data sheet.

Since they are the same engines, with only difference beeing a 5mm greater Bore, i suppose both have top 3500 RPM max.

Aside that, i noticed that the Elefant and Ferdinant, Pz.Bef.Wg.VI(P) and Vk 45.01(P) have 312,5 PS per engine. Tho at 2600 rpm…

Hopefully in some 8 weeks ill recive Data Document about specifically the engines. I hope they will give more insight.

You really shouldn’t use the tachometer to determine the engine’s actual maximum RPM. They almost always go well above the actual maximum RPM that can be achieved. Same thing with velocity.

It’s very easy to notice that if you have ever looked at the dashboard of a car. When I was little I always asked my dad why the tachometer and speedometer showed values that went well above what the car was actually capable of doing, and he could never answer because he was equally perplexed.

For example, here is the dashboard for an M4 (105), so this is a late war M4 hull with large hatches and a single glacis plate, and the radial engine:

The speedometer (which measures velocity) goes up to 60 miles per hour (96.6 km/h) , and the tachometer (measures engine RPM) up to 4000 RPM. The maximum RPM of this engine, to my knowledge, is 2400 RPM.

Same thing but for an early 1942 M4A3, and this time the speedometer goes up to 80 miles per hour (128.7 km/h):

All that to say that what the devices can potentially display and what the engine/tank can actually achieve are two completely different things.

You mentioned earlier that these Maybach engines aren’t governed? Then maybe it’s possible that on lighter vehicles they have the horsepower to pull the vehicle into higher RPMs, while when mounted in an actual tank they simply cannot go as high, at least not on the very high gears.
If I remember right that was something with one of the early Pz.III tanks, which has a theoretical top speed of around 70 km/h. It’s theoretical because it only happens if you do the math, that is, you take the sprocket radius, the engine’s maximum RPM, combine all the gear ratios together and that’s the top speed you get, but in real life the tank simply could not reach that speed.

Fair enove, idk actually i drive electric.
The early Pz III Ausf.E-G had a 10 Gear semi automatic transmission with a top soeed of 67 Km/H, in russian tests they reached even the 71 km/h that are in game.

Well, the Sd.Kfz.9 with the HL 108 was the primary recovery vehicle.

And yeah.

Overall while this is open end and will take multiple month, i wrote to the Bundesarchiv for a digitalisation of multiple Documents about the HL 108 and HL 120, which will hopefully give more light to it all. But it will take at least 1,5 Month, realistically more like 3 and depending on how many other people ask for digitalisation even longer. But its awesome that it is even available.

Beyond that, ill keep my feet still on the subject, looking into more books is useless. After all everything beyond what i know of know is either a funky calculation or assumption, which wont really get far.

I came to the conclusion that 3000 RPM with 270 and 300 PS are the maximum. Or at least for the production model.

I also remembered, that i had a report for the Pz III Ausf.B a year ago, that was also implemented, it had 265 PS, however no RPM number given.

Found 2 further books giving 270 PS.

Gives the Number 270 / 3000, but coming across more source material is difficult, anyone know more?
