Sorry for being late with answers. Well it can be pretty fun to play with. But I will have to agree with @The_Marco_Polo on this one. It has paper thin armor, slow movement but a big cannon that can most of the time one-shot thing with its massive HE shell.
I will also agree that T-44 would be the best option for next vehicle to research. Look at it as better armored T-34.
I wouldn’t just ignore the line but just hold off on going through, the T-44 and the IS-2 (1944) would make the grind a bit easer cause that tree has a few vehicles that are fun to use like the Object 775 or the Object 268. I just feel you would have more trouble trying to use the 2S3M to unlock the other vehicles just cause of the odd playstyle is has. You can’t use it like a normal tank destroyer cause of the HE shell it has so you have to aim for roofs of tanks depending on how much armor they have, if its smaller tanks then you should be fine aiming anywhere.
Early BRs I couldn’t tell you but I know that 6.0+ ground units are really good because they get vehicles like the Centurion, T-55, T-72, Leopard 2A4 and even the best Leopard 2A7 in the game, the Strf 9040C is also a good competitor to the 2S38 in Russia.
For aircraft again, Early BRs I couldn’t tell you if its good or not but 4.3+ they get good planes, plus at the end you get the Gripen which is the best fighter in top tier right now.
