Fire on aircraft

Good day, I would like to inquire about the mechanics in RB mode regarding fires in the fuel tank and engine on aircraft. Is it possible to extinguish these fires, and how can they spread across modules? Thank you in advance!

cutting your throttle and turning off your engine aswell as diving seems to help extuinguish engine fires.

Fuel fires are almost always a death sentence, and I’m not sure if diving actually effects it. They (sometimes) go out when you’re out of fuel, but even then full metal planes in Warthunder are made of paper and fall apart within seconds of a fire starting.

If it’s an engine fire, you have two options, try put it out with a rush of air, or try to choke the fire out,
1: Open all radiators, 0% prop pitch, turn off engine and dive and maneuver quickly.
2: Close all radiators, 100% prop pitch, turn off engine, stall yourself.

Fuel fires are a little bit more tricky, in my experience self sealing fuel tanks are almost always a death sentence in this and I have no idea why, you can either increase throttle to try burn through the remains of your fuel in that tank, or you can try cut the engine (turn it off too) to try and stop flow of fuel. Either way I tend to die.

With those, you basically have to hope that your fuel tank either took light damage or heavy damage.

Light damage, assuming self sealing: the fuek tank will seal it quickly and put the fire out.

Heavy damage: the fuel quick runs out and the fire dies.

Anything else and you are dead.

I think it is because the tank prolongs the fire by trying to seal the hole. Eventually, the fuel tank bursts but the longer burn time means more damage.

Most vehicles right now don’t have their extinguishers. The Mechanic has been suggested but as of right now hasn’t been fully implemented. Wished Gaijin just did it in one update instead of in small doses but shrug.

Imho those mechanics have a kind of RNG factor implemented and differ from aircraft to aircraft. So every countermeasure working fine on plane A might not work on plane B.

Example 1:

  • Whilst i am able to put 90% of engine fires out (like described above = high speed dives, engine off…) in my SM 92 - my B7A2 has the “eternal fire” effect - you can’t put it out, but it takes ages before your plane burns up.

  • If you watch this replay- i sent down a B-34 at 4:01, but i was hit by the ai gunner (player was not in gunner mode) and set on fire (=engine fire) at 4:03. I had zero challenge to dive to the forward airfield, crash landed and repaired at 5:40. All you have to do is to align your plane with the runway, as the fire kills rather quick the control cable; the elevator lasts very long, so you can land without ailerons and rudder…

Example 2:

  • You can extinguish most fuel tank fires by putting the burning wing in a 90° angle up in the air - if your fuel tank is small enough most fires can be put out before the fire is spreading. I learned this trick years ago from A6M pilots.

  • So whilst this works rather effective in the B7A2 (idk 60%?) - it is rather useless in my SM 92 (10-20%?)…
