G’day everyone!
I’ve been using the F14 IRIAF for awhile now, and only recently have I tried messing around with the sweep wing controls and whatnot. Is it viable to activate manual control over the sweep when dogfighting? Or leave it in auto mode.

Depends on what you want to do.
If I’m sure I’m going to dogfight, I leave it on manual and just 0% it. The unswept wing rip speed is 1021 IAS if you need a marker.
Yes. I keep wing swept back for the speed but when I dogfight i put them in the forward position so I can turn better.
The wings sweep back fully at Mach .98 on auto.
It seems to be the same on all planes with wings you can sweep back too btw (if there’s any that do it at different speeds I’m interested to know)
You can gain a little extra acceleration up to that Mach .98 point by manually sweeping them back, but it’s a trade off for stability.
Dogfight wise you could increase your roll rate by manually sweeping the wings mid dogfight at lower speeds but you’d have to be really on the ball to be in control of that and also everything else and awareness at the same time really to be any kind of effective with it, or potentially just sweep them back manually a bit to increase that roll rate a little over your opponent and leave them set there, just be aware you’ll stall out and bleed speed much easier as a result in such a situation too so the benefit may wel be outweighed by the negatives really.
You’re better off leaving them auto for all the potential benefits imo
It’s not as much as the MiG-23s where you’ll be beating everything at your BR with them manually extended, but it can still mildly help. If you wanna practice and get used to it go ahead, but it’s probably not worth it if you’re thinking about it to the point it’s distracting you from everything else you have to keep track of.
The F-14’s is only semi-manual, so you shouldn’t have to worry about wing ripping it. Personally what i do is I set the keybind for sweep back to be throttle, with a correction towards fully extended. So that way they’re normally as extended as can be, but when you hold down throttle, it sweeps all the way back for extra speed.
Thank you everyone!
