F-104G/F-104S/TAF etc - missing IRST & EEGS, reports were accepted, but there were NO changes

I don’t really understand why Gaijin has been aware of the F-104S/G’s significant shortcomings for two years now but hasn’t done anything about it. These planes really suffer from their BR, so having EEGS or IRST would SOMETIMES come in handy…

The F-104 TAF is in a really bad state right now. 11.3 is simply too high of a battle rating for the aircraft, and the nerfed flight model makes dogfighting a literal death sentence.

The aircraft should be moved down to 11.0, and the flight model changes should be reverted for most of the F-104s in the game. The only exception would be the F-104A, which I’ve heard may be too strong with the old flight model.

In its current state, the F-104 TAF is being held back by both its battle rating and its flight performance.

Hi.

I play War Thunder for its realism. The F-104S TAF is a demanding aircraft and difficult to play. I’m joining this thread for two reasons. First, as I mentioned, the realism is very difficult; this aircraft would greatly benefit from EEGS and IRST support. Second, another player provided documents showing that the aircraft was equipped with such systems.

Hi, I understand your concerns, and I’d like to see all F-104s receive improvements to their flight performance, as well as battle rating reductions for the overtiered variants.

You also have to understand that this game isn’t particularly realistic when compared to simulators such as DCS or Steel Beasts. I’ll be making a post later today discussing the issues I have with the F-104 family in more detail.

I’m honestly surprised there wasn’t more backlash when the flight model was nerfed a while ago. If Gaijin can buff the Mirage F1 and significantly improve its performance, then there’s no reason they can’t revisit the F-104 as well.

You’re right, you can’t compare the realism of War Thunder to DCS, and I completely agree. As for the F-104, you have to remember that it’s not a dogfighter, but an aircraft with high top speed and acceleration.

My point is that for two years, no one has added the systems we mentioned—EEGS and IRST.

First and foremost, isn’t this also about historical accuracy—the very thing Gaijin is “supposedly” famous for? Or maybe not?.. If this plane had been given what it should have had (IRST & EEGS), it would still be weak for its BR, BUT it would sometimes be helpful.

And finally, the IRST modeled on the F-104 in the game wouldn’t be a visual dummy, but something that actually works—I just don’t understand why they don’t want to do this…

Na don’t worry, 104a will soon be 9.7 because people still think it’s the problem and then every single one in the game will 100% be overtiered besides arguably the asa

I finally found the time to talk about the F-104 family and the issues many of us have with these aircraft. Unfortunately, I haven’t touched most of them because of their current state. I may end up repeating a few points, so apologies in advance if I sound like a broken record.

I’ll start with the flight performance, which is currently laughable. Engaging in a dogfight is practically suicide because the F-104 simply can’t turn anymore. The flight model changes have made the aircraft significantly more difficult to fly in air battles, which is why so many players now use the F-104 as a bomber rather than a fighter.

My second issue is the battle ratings because they don’t make much sense for several of the later F-104 variants. I should note that I haven’t played the early models at 9.3, and they don’t really apply to this. From what I’ve heard, they’re already very strong and can be extremely difficult to deal with in a full downtier.

I’ll use the F-104 TAF as my main example because I’ve played it extensively. I’m still not sure why it was moved up in the first place. When it was introduced in 2022, it was a decent aircraft. It wasn’t exceptional, but it was capable of sneaking up on opponents, scoring kills with AIM-9Ps, and using its excellent roll rate to force overshoots.

Today you’re constantly thrown into 12.0 and 12.3 matches against aircraft such as F-18s and Mirage 2000s carrying significantly more capable missiles, while you’re stuck with outdated AIM-9Ps. I can only imagine how difficult the experience is for the F-104S.ASA, and quite frankly, watching paint dry sounds more entertaining than grinding it.

There are also some questionable battle rating placements within the F-104 family that Gaijin has ignored. For example, the Taiwanese F-104 sits at a higher BR than the Japanese version despite carrying fewer Sidewinders.

My proposed solution is relatively simple. Most of the later F-104 variants should be moved down by 0.3 BR, and possibly the opposite for early ones. The Japanese and Taiwanese variants should both sit at 10.3. Gaijin should also revisit the radar performance across the F-104 family, which would be particularly beneficial in Simulator Battles where these aircraft tend to perform best. Finally, I believe the flight model changes should be reverted to the old one so the F-104s can once again function as a fighter rather than being zombie.

I might make a separate post about this because I genuinely hate what they’ve done to it.

The japan one needs to even be 10.0. If they insist on thinking the current 10.3 are balanced then f104j should not be the same rating. All those planes literally have same high g missiles but flares and are upengined

I completely agree with your assessment of the F-104’s current state; as it stands now, it looks as if the devs have completely forgotten that this aircraft even exists in the game; it lacks all of its basic combat functions (IRST or EEGS) or even the previously mentioned iconic auxiliary fuel tanks.

This aircraft is only slightly less recognizable than the legendary F-14, yet it has been treated as something to “check off the list” and forgotten. I have absolutely no idea how to reach the devs so they’ll remember it and take a closer look at the entire F-104 family. reconsider the BR for each of the aircraft in the game, and add the previously mentioned missing features.

If you start a new thread about this, I’d be happy to participate and you’ll have my support, but I honestly doubt we have any clout here—as you saw with the F-14D, it took over 1,000 posts in the official release thread, a buzz on YouTube/ Reddit, and a barrage of negative reviews on Steam, for example, for Gaijin to hear the players’ voices. I’m afraid it will be hard for us to generate that much buzz around this issue, but maybe it’s worth a try…

The bottom line is this: the F-104 is a completely forgotten aircraft lacking all its basic functions and with a horrendously high BR relative to its combat capabilities, especially the flight model, which limits gameplay to bomber roles or occasional zoom-and-boom attacks; the flight model doesn’t allow for dogfights against anything more maneuverable than a B-29…

Gaijin, the F-104s need your attention more than any other aircraft :(

I don’t want to bite the hand that feeds us, but let’s be honest, it would work perfectly well at that battle rating, especially when the F-1 is sitting comfortably at 10.0.

The roc f104g is still 10.7 despite lacking flares so like, it’s unlikely that’s going to happen

It showed up in my recommendations, and I have to admit, someone did a pretty good job with it :)
