gun weighs about 400LB total with ammo so its far heavier which why i have doubts
No, because Unlike some other nations (cough Italy Cough) our Stuff stays secret.
Funfact: the German Eurofighter Manuel has no Cover page since its just a collection of some Online Documents (Source: German MOD in an FIO Request for the name of the plane on an cover page)
Zusammenfassung
"Dear Mr. X
I am returning to your inquiry based on the IFG of April 17, 2025 (reference).
Following administrative review, I can inform you that the Federal Ministry of Defense (BMVg) does not have any official information subject to the application. The “Flight Manual” to which you refer is part of an electronic document collection on the Eurofighter. It does not have its own book cover or a comparable cover sheet. "
so its forever gonna remain a mystery whos right
Same case as with the Name of the German Eurofighter → EF-2000
I think there is documents regarding a ballast to replace the PIRATE and gun. So it mostly likely is at least some concern
maybe but im not gonna spend a day combing through the archives you can if ya want i honestly dont care that much as the difference doesnt even matter in the grand scheme
Gun itself is reportedly 100kg (without ammo and without drum)
a single Ammo 27x145mm (projectile and cartridge) is reportedly of 516g (and there is 150 on board the EF-2000)
so 516g x150 = 77.4 kg (total mass of ammo only)
177.4Kg = 391.1 Lbs
If you’re considering the mass relative to the Ammo Drum as the Gun Feeding Link from the drum,
It is pretty much understandable to get 400Lbs for the total.
all numbers comes from French Wikipedia
thanks its far heavier than the pirate system which ways roughly 135LB which is a little over a fourth of the weight of the gun which is why im pretty sure its removal wouldnt effect its FM insane amount to require a ballast its a drop in the bucket by comparison
I may have some trouble to understand what you want from the PIRATE systems weight.
Can you expend on your idea, so that i can understand better?
oh well german ones dont get it meaning there 135LB lighter but i may have had ballast on it which cancels it out but we dont know if it does
btw 135LB only reduces turn rate by .02s it would be a tiny buff since they dont have the fun IRST system
only thing that’s exceptional about pirate is its tws (200 targets which is pretty insane)… everything else about it is pretty darn standard for its time. might as well keep the irst, it’s not that heavy
its useful for range spotting stealth planes and guiding 9Ms
the reason they opted out is cause it was like million dollars per unit
meant irl, in game it’s definitely worth having. but pirate can’t guide any air to ground stuff, basically limited to air to air only. pretty useless imo|
compare it to eots on f-35 or ols-35 on su-35 which can function as both irst and laser designator for air to ground
Dont forget things like

and
using it for ground attack:

I’ve not seen either mentioned for anything else yet
Tbf it’s kind of in its own league. I don’t think it’s very fair to compare to PIRATE since it’s meant to be all-purpose from the start
eh that says just detecting/tracking ground vehicles for pilot to see, nothing that actually says that it queues weapons
Which would be more than enough to then cue the tpod onto if nothing else. Though might even be enough for a Mode3 Brimstone
yeah but im saying typhoon is forced to bring targeting pods. more modern fighters don’t need to bring a pod and can designate using only their irst (not sure if the new rafale irst on 4.1 can do this) (not in game)
Of course, exlcuding Brimstone 2/3 and Spear-3s that dont require a targeting pod. Though I cant think of a single aircraft taht would solely rely upon IRST over an actual Tpod.
(excluding the F-35 that basically has an intergrated tpod)
