Doesnt it do that at the expense of being more likely to transfer lock from the target, seeing as the speed and range gates are larger, allowing more things to fall within them?
You can get a bit of drift on the target but it will correct once the scan pattern repeats. So fast close (sub ~15km) in stuff its going to struggle but you should already be using your HMD by that time anyway.
Been using it since I got home from work and its a marked improvement.
Use the sensor type switch button after you lock on to the target. IRST → Radar. After launching AMRAAM, you can switch back to IRST.
I’m not entirely sure, but it seems to me that if you switch to IRST yourself, and not the automatics do it, then AMRAAM still gets target designation.
It’s just that IRST is MUCH faster than radar at these distances and it seems more logical to me to use this sensor. Plus the opponent won’t know that he is in the sights. Until the sensor switches to radar, of course.
P.S. Don’t tell this method to the German Typhoon pilots.
Am I right in understanding…? The Su-30SM is capable of shooting down ALL of the Typhoon’s AMRAAMs, after which it will still have half of the missiles left?
