I recall something like that but cannot be sure.
I think it was just that the same manufacturer had their products (components) in the F-35 and CAPTOR-M no?
Could be the case
The Captor-M Radar - Defense Archives
Found this on Captor M outlines a lot of the capabilities development and which nation made what.
i am beginning to wonder if the people in this thread actually know what the word “worst” means tbh
I think both sides are over/underestimating it.
For those that tend to throw around the term “worst”, I see a lot of ppl saying its pretty much unusable. That just isnt true, you can lock targets and find targets, and for air RB specifically, with its spotting system and clearly defined scan zones on the screen, itll work just fine.
In sim, where the scan zones arent obviously defined, and where radars ACTUALLY matter, it takes a really big hit in its effectiveness due to its horrid and frankly stupid scan zones, but you can probs still get away with it to some degree if you can visually find the targets and through experience, steer the radar to the target yourself (though this largely defeats the whole point of a radar as a search sensor).
In VR, where visual quality is even worse and you likely arent spotting jets visually at anything more than ~10-15km unless they’re in the cons or maybe you have a very expensive VR headset, its borderline worthless. Like, it exists, but the absolutely horrid vertical scan zones of the radar make it little more than a formality before you launch missiles.
For those who pretend its “good”, its simply not. Its useable in the heavily handhold environment of arcade++ (air RB), but it falls apart anytime you need to rely on it to do anything more than lock something so you can fire a missile.
Its scan volume is average, but its largely skewed towards azimuth coverage with little to no elevation coverage. Elevation is the most important to have since RWRs give you threat azimuth but not threat elevation, or if they do provide threat elevation, the info is very limited (such as target is above/below you or target is above/below other RWR contacts).
Good radars offer high elevation coverage at high scan rates to quickly find and engage incoming threats. For example, the American radars, while subpar in total volume scanned, have elevation angles between 12.8-16.5deg at speeds of 1.2-1.85 sec for a full scan. They also have volumetric scan rates between 173.08 - 213.33 deg^2/s (across all their search patterns)
Compare that to the CAPTOR-M, with the second worst max elevation coverage (8.4deg) and second worst volumetric scan rate (148.24deg^2/s) and a scan time of 3.4s on said mode, and the literal closest competitor to it in search performance is the Su-27SM’s N001VEP radar, widely considered one of, if not the worst “top tier” radar in-game.
Scan zones and scan speeds arent “everything” tho, and the CAPTOR-M exceeds the N001VEP in overall capabilities, but they are the defining features of a good “search” radar. The fact they are arguably the closest comparison speaks volumes about how bad the CAPTOR-M truly is in any time you need a radar and not just a lock.
Above that all the new “lockable munitions” mechanics seem to have really messed up the overal radar logic in this game. Like I enjoyed ARB with IR only, but… With eurofighter I had multiple instances when I was trying to lock an enemy head on but was locking his rocket instead, multiple instances of a radar lock slipping into the 4th dimension, going underground etc. Multiple instances of radar scan finding a target and then after a few seconds deciding “Uh, oh, I HAVE TO RESCAN ALL OF THEM ANEW” and in a low reaction time playstyle I like - it’s hella critical. I’m too busy flaring/multipathing/pathfinding/attacking to have any time to fight the radar as well. And the fact that all IR missiles on top tier slave to radar lock by default only makes the situation worse, meaning that I don’t have a plan B in case something is going south. It’s probably not the worst. One of the worst at top tier? Yea. Annoying to use? Yea. Unpleasant to use? Yea. Is it at least rewarding to fight it? Absolutely not.
Yeah, its not actually worthless, but it aint good, and it aint even fun if you actually need it to do the job a radar is supposed to do.
If they allowed AIM-120’s to be fired pitbull via HMD like IRL, I have a sneaking suspicion EFT players would never turn their radars on again until it got some major buffs and fixes.
Or if they allowed them to be fired and guided with PIRATE
You might have to change the spreadsheet a bit
Ill fix it when it comes to live, but thats a nerf, a pretty big one actually, so I’m not sure why the french players are happy about it xD
this is not unique to the eurofighter
Yeah, it even happens to the Rafale.
Shock and surprise, I’m sure.
J-11B’s 1493 finally received its own radar modes now in the dev server, before it was using copy-paste modes from the N001.
Might want to update that as well.
Will do soon, ty for letting me know :)
I hope it’s not once again a version with no changes to the Eurofighter, because otherwise it would be too disappointing unless they at least fix some of the reported issues, but not even that. I want to believe this is still the first dev and that they might change something in the second or third one.
Yea, I know.
That’s why I played control match in Mig-29g.
And how surprised I was when it wasn’t actually that abysmal.
Well, given all the differences in usage it is. But what it means is that Mig-29g’s radar does it’s job just fine.
While Eurofighter’s one doesn’t.
