Did I somehow misunderstand the tutorial on targeting and weak points of ground vehicles?

I remember when playing the tutorial, it said that the crosshairs of my tank will turn green when shooting on a weak point of a tank and red when it will not penetrate.
Yet, when I play in ground battles, sometimes even when I shoot in the green spot the round doesn’t penetrate. And sometimes when I shoot in a red spot, the round penetrates and I get a kill. I also see other tanks shoot rounds to my tanks through places where I know for a fact it should show a red crosshair.
And its not my internet connect(which is fine), or the movement of tanks(they’re often stationary when I shoot).
So, what exactly did I misunderstand from the tutorial?

Your shot is not always going to hit the exact spot that you are aiming at.
Not only is there spread (the “adjustment of fire” modification can help with this to some degree, hover it to see a short video of what it does) that depends on the type of gun and the round fired but the enemy (and you) might be moving as well.

The red/green crosshair is more of a general guide than a pin point accurate tool.

Is there some general rule on which spots are the weakest on a tank but might not show up as green? I even shot some stationary targets and faced the same problem.

These are my general tips for ground realistic (written for a bit higher BR but they still apply):
