Changes to Bomber Survivability Feedback and Discussion

You can watch the video again if you want, but one of your crewmates was dead, and the other two (the pilots) were between red and orange; the reason you got this result is because they hit the wrong areas. As I mentioned before, German pilots were either shooting at the engine or the top of the fuselage because that was the way they inflicted the most damage, and you can’t deny the pilots’ lives.I bet they’ll both be dead after a few more bullets.

The type of ammunition used here is also very important.

And? The point of this was not to test if you can kill crew or not, that was unchanged. It was if you could shoot down an interwar bomber without targeting the unchanged parts.

As it was before neither HE or AP did much of anything structurally, which is just plain fiction. Even a simple Arado 234 or another small 2-engine bomber like P1Y could tank hundreds of shells effortlessly.

And with the previous damage model the “damage” you could hope for was an engine fire that you can ignore or hopefully hitting the crew. Even on this INTERWAR BOMBER that was routinely shot down by planes with .30cal guns, a blacked out fuel tank didn’t start a fire nor stop me from flying.

lol no it ate a few hundred more shells and was only “shot down” when the rest of the elevator fell off

As I said again, friend, the type and angle of the bullet are important for tearing off an airplane wing. If your friend had fired at the crew instead of the wing, he would have shot down the plane long ago; he just needed to play it a little more logically.

If they’re broken or not working, you can create a report, and also, if they’re broken, how do they take down bombers in Live with 4 shots regardless of bullet type?

Reading is hard apparently.

No need, it seems the fictional bomber DMs have already been nerfed. I’ll shoot them again later. Plus they work fine against everything else, just like the missiles from before. It’s a bomber issue.

It’s hard to understand why you would choose something that takes a minute instead of something that takes 10 seconds (I gave the times as examples). As I said before, You need to hit the engine or the connection points; also, with a 20mm cannon and around 20-30 rounds with HEI rounds, the engine will start burning. You’re just talking for the sake of talking.

You mean the heavily reinforced wing specifically designed to take an absolute beating? You know in real life wings dont just magically snap off after getting hit on the wingtip, not to mention you arent even aiming for the fuel. a few holes doesnt kill aerodynamics that much.

As long as it generates enough buoyancy, it doesn’t matter how many holes there are.

Again, why would we shoot the crew when we already know you can get crew kills even on live server? This change was targeting the bombers’ structural strength and as we saw from the preview videos it should still be possible to cause catastrophic structural failure.

Connection points… like the wing root? The place where real pilots aimed to bring down bombers? I’m on the dev server right now shooting one of the B-29s flying around, and it has now put out its 5th fire on the same engine. You know, the bomber IRL that was known for deadly and catastrophic engine fires.

6th engine fire now.

The wing root fuel tank caught fire once and put itself out despite having numerous 20mm-shaped holes in it.

7th engine fire. Still nothing.

It’s a miracle how the japanese ever shot down a single one of these, or that any B-29s ever were lost to engine fires.

the strongest armament that Do 17 ever saw was a few .30cal MGs and they were still readily shot down

just aim for the fuel bro! it’s that easy!

How about 3500 holes?

If you look at actual combat data: the 1945 USSBS report (“Report on Armament in the Air War”) documents B-17s and B-24s repeatedly taking heavy flak and gun damage and still making it back to base - there are hundreds of archival photos of this. Engines catching fire multiple times and the crew putting it out is also historically accurate: B-17s and B-24s had fire extinguisher systems and could put out multiple engine fires and keep flying. That’s not a game bug, that’s how it actually worked.

The “3500 holes” argument is also exaggerated. Question is where those holes land. Real pilots were specifically trained to aim for the wing root, fuel tanks, and engines precisely because random hits to the fuselage usually didn’t bring a bomber down. This is clearly written in the handbook that the German Air Force gives to its pilots; you can read it.

Also, Wald’s diagram is a good example for your strokes.

I love the amount of denial of reality in here. After 100+, 20mm shells to the wing bomber is toast. That’s really it. No amount of space magic and luck is going to fix that.

That’s not a hole made by 88mm shell going from below through narrowest profile possible.or hitting some.mostly empty part of the fuselag
These are HE and AP shell demolishing the wing and dealing maximum amount of damage.

People claiming multiple engine fires should be survivable just want to dominate air combat in their 0-skill deathstars.
But hey, Grok said that it should work that way, guys!

Once again, I posted a clip of what a short burst of MK108 and MG151/20 does to B-17. If someone thinks several times as many hits should do jack shit, well…

Has anyone listened to Sabi Mia Boyla’s song btw

I enjoy using AI to find resources and to communicate my thoughts to you in a clear and understandable way.

Not sure those 7.62s ever took off a wing by themselves though. In the Battle of Britain big planes were brought down mostly by crew deaths and engine fires.

That is sort of the core of the argument? Right now, in game, one average pass with any 2x 20mm fighter on any bomber nose to tail is a reliable kill. I can’t remember the last time it didn’t work for me. Wings fall off, bombs explode, they’re done.

People are saying wings should not just fall off due to hits from 20mm or lower that way, that the structure of the bomber should withstand a couple passes with 20s and 12.7s and that would be a good thing, even if it led to meta and balance changes down the line. Somehow this turns into an argument on how “30 mms are/are not completely useless” and it rabbit holes the discussion something fierce.

As far as the test drive results which showed this great impregnability early on, I wonder if that’s just because I’m pretty sure test-flight bombers don’t model full bomb loads so they were actually harder to kill compared to actual player planes. As the update to the Dev server yesterday makes kind of clear, quite a few of those plane destructions in the game now are 20mm or smaller hitting bombs in the bay. Again, that’s probably something by itself that should never lead to a catastrophic destruction.

OK, imma say something about this. Obviously there super survivable, Because everyone that you see making vids is shooting them from the rear, while being level with them, One of if not THE WORST place to attack bombers, until someone makes a vid showing they are still survivable from guns from all angles except the back, or at least a front of top down approach then I will agree, but from what I know they still might be super missile resistant so idk

It looks like this now actually

And hundreds of B-17s and 24s were readily shot down by fighters with a single cannon, while said fighters were often outnumbered 10:1

Understatement actually

So how many shells to the wing root do you think a bomber could take?

You see, my J6K has six cannons and 1200rds of ammo for them, and I’m here on the dev server sawing through the B-29s, and they are taking thousands of shells to be shot down even with a mix of 2 parts AP and 3 parts HE.

The engine fires do pretty much nothing aside from taking out the engine and MAYBE eventually the tail controls - but they also might just not

same with fuel fires, often they do nothing or put themselves out despite overwhelming damage to the fuel tank

Okay but what is “a couple passes” in objective terms?

I’ve also had even 75mm APHE and HE shells (both fusing) fail to kill a bomber on the first hit (on previous dev version). That’s ridiculous.

Which angle do you want exactly? And shot at by what kinda armament?

Can you actually provide a source? All you’re doing is pulling stuff out of your ass.

Engineering???
