Cannon damage below 30mm is being done wrong

Yeah, basically.

I have quite a few of screenshots with ridiculously low damage, 3 shells around the wing tip and wing tip is still attached, compared to Shvak 1-clicking my entire wing into oblivion.

And the funniest thing ever - MG151 15mm is just wrecking planes like there’s no tomorrow so on top of superior ballistics, it’s also just as good in dealing damage when compared to MG151/20

The MG 151 really only work because they don’t have realShatter, producing a high number of very low damaging fragments that each has decent chance to set fires.
Thus a single 15mm HEF-T has one of the best chances to set a fuel tank on fire, even with a near miss.

Structucal damage is extremely low in comparison:

However, if they had realShatter implemented, like the ground version, they would become extremely deadly, since realShatter damage appears to be almost not care about the explosive content.
Resulting in a a huge boost to small caliber shell, that would otherwise deal hardly any damage.

Yeah essentialy everytjing I hit starts burning, this may be it. Structural damage is kinda meh, planes get ripped apart, but it requires some proper clobbering

20mm’s across the board are wickedly overperforming. Shvak’s at the moment annihilate aircraft in short bursts whereas they were painfully anaemic in reality with pilots complaining that they were too weak to reliably bring down 190F’s.

As it stands 20mm’s are doing the damage of 30mm’s but with a much higher fire rate. Wings being evaporated was a very rare occurrence in reality whereas in game it happens frequently. I won’t mention the cartoonish ability to tear entire tail sections away from the fuselage with microscopic bursts.

The older damage model was far more realistic, no more tail separations but control cables etc would actually be destroyed and you could actually be shot down due to wing damage (not wing separation). I can’t even remember the last time my tail controls etc failed barring the tail coming off.

The other issue is that aircraft that should be tough simply aren’t. My C.202 should have a historically seriously weak armament and yet even 2x .50’s can delete P-47 wings and IL-2 tails in one pass with short bursts. I know because I’ve done it and have the video footage to back it up. Fix weapon damage.

At the moment, small caliber guns benefit the most from the current realShatter damage.

We really need an entire weapon performance overhaul because at the moment guns are just comical.
Any round that isn’t HE is simply not needed, since instead of penetrating pilot armor using AP, HE will just take off your tail.

The high RoF of 12.7mm or 20mm combined with the damage just beats out all other guns and while larger guns can be underwhelming in comparison, 37mm HE can also take off the wing or tail of a B-29 in one shot.

But then you still have to deal with realShatter RNG or just components like flaps absorbing all the damage. Resulting in one time taking out an aircraft in one hit and the other times they can tank two 37mm and keep flying.

In the Jet case, tail separation still happens, albeit in part.

Meteors and Me 262s does.
SMB2 does.
F8U/F-8E does.

TBH I don’t understand the difference between them and jets where tail separation does not happen.

One of problem is, fuel tank explosions are still very rare except MK 108, ADEN/DEFA.

Even the M61 Vulcan was capable of causing the fuel tank to explode just like some gun camera footage from Vietnam.

In M61, fuel tank explosions should happen frequently, and the same goes for the T-160/M39 that uses the same rounds.

Maybe that should happen more often with the 23mm/37mm on the MiG-9/MiG-15/MiG-17 as well.

They have large caliber cannons to intercept bombers, but hit against fighters more structurally vulnerable than theirs, there should be no reason why damage could not result in unextinguishable fires or fuel tank explosions.

Jet fuel doesn’t melt steel beams.

😂😂

Wing tanks, in Jet fighters, are probably too narrow to cause fuel explosions.

Russia stuck to using A-IX-2 which is just RDX with aluminum powder while US 20mm HEI rounds are actually mostly filled with Incendiary mixture.
Like how the M23 was developed to have a better effect on Me 262 Jet fuel, containing almost 3 times the incendiary material of the M1 Incendiary, that also burned somewhat hotter.

Smaller calibers are generally more effective with greater incendiary than explosive content.
