Just kinda don’t get why we’re given these now when they could have been provided at any point in the last 4 years with little upset. Doesn’t seem to hit the broadside of a barn when dropped high and slow with pretty precise designation. Map designation would help give them utility in fast, moderately accurate drops whilst maintaining awareness.
They are just a faster TV guided bomb, not to mention that the need for a targeting pod artificially limits the aircraft that can get these.
While GPS bombs were meant to avoid this issue.
As it stands, they serve effectively no purpose. Laser guided bombs can track moving targets, these can’t. The designation for these bombs slows you down if you want to use them with anything resembling accuracy. There needs to be something to warrant using these otherwise anything that can carry lased ordnance will just carry lased ordnance.
Not asking for much, just asking for utility. Especially given that in the current state they could have been added a half decade ago.
they are good for stationary AI-targets in air rb and air sb, since they are fire and forget.
If you can carry the same amount on gps bomb as regular bombs, then the GPS Bombs are much bedder since you dont need to line up to bomb multiple targets.
You just need to make sure the targets are somewhat close but you can drop the GPS bombs and they will find their way to the targets that are left and right.
Here a simple picture to sum it up
Definitely a lukewarm addition that could have come earlier, but I don’t think they’re supposed to be more than that. Enabling precision bombing without lasing one target at a time or flying low to manually drop each bomb on target is a nice addition (just nice) that I appreciate. I’ve had some measure of fun in dev just using them to wipe out airfield AA from altitude and then dropping down to cull bots that get stuck at low speed near their spawn, somehow.
I could see them being used in some force-integration sort of way if there were a way to designate a target as a ground vehicle for a friendly jet with GNSS bombs to drop on, but anything beyond their current functionality seems a little convoluted to me.
I would love to see that squadrone members can give their jet friend a designatet point.
with randoms less efectiv/impossible but with friends a “game changer”.
even bedder if we can use ouer scout drones for this.
since the gps bombs dont track it would not even be op.
Also, note that the bare minimum to use a GNSS bomb is just Bomb CCRP - you can cycle through bomb targets and set target points in third person this way. I’m not going to pretend this is some silver bullet saving GNSS bombs from being DoA, but, y’know.
As long as they hit their target (unlike AS34 Komorans), they will be fine as a niche weapon like retarded bombs or napalm.
everyone of these have a unike trait wich makes them bedder in some situations over their competition.
especialy for Sim players this will be a huge thing, just aim them with a Targeting pod and hitting multiple of these stationari target in one go, instead of going hot in to drop them accurate under AA fire or just hitting on at a time with laser guided bombs or sacrificing numbers of bombs for TV bombs
I definitely think this would add utility to GPS bombs.
Imagine someone on the ground designating a ground targets for bomb strikes, this would maybe pave the way for friendly lases for guided weapons down the line.
If it’s too op in the event that the entire team could designate, then they could always just limit it to scout vehicles or drones and/or squadron members only.
Honestly I see them being useful in a pretty big way. If you bring both GPS Bombs and standard Guided Bombs it could be pretty lethal. Say for example you see a guy sitting still sniping, just drop a GPS bomb on him that way you dont waste you time guiding in a bomb for an idle target. Then if you see a moving one just switch to standard guided bombs.
The amount of times I see a couple of people just sitting still in a position and I just wish that I did not have to guide the bomb makes me really happy these are finally getting added.
There are options like the E-GBU, Paveway IV and L-JDAM (DSU-38) kit. That provide GPS/INS + SALH guidance. I’d expect to see them at some point in the future as they combine existing guidance methods.
