Ammo can be destroyed without detonating. Black ammo means its no longer usable. It will usually detonate but wet ammo etc can help to stop the detonation. Red breaches and barrels can cause detonations if fired too BTW.

@TouristicGrub64 As @Razielkaine has mentioned, Ammo isn’t going to detonate if it turns black, the moment ammo turns black means it has burnt out. Remember a fuse and a fuse charge are still a thing in tank shells. If either one of those 2 fail which they can then the shell’s gunpowder is just gonna burn out.
Not burn. A single main gun cartridge burning in the tank is enough to ruin the whole crew’s day. Black means its just unusable. Broken, dented, etc.
