Amiral Petre Bărbuneanu (F-260): Romania’s SKR
History:
As the Cold War dragged on into its fourth decade, the Socialist Republic of Romania was beginning to change. Socialism was on its way out, and Romania was growing ever more independent. While it would take until 1989 to fully break free from the Warsaw Pact, the domestic arms industry of Romania was in full swing, producing not only small arms but armored vehicles, tanks, and even ships. When the time came to upgrade the Romanian fleet with a new class of anti-submarine corvettes, inspiration was taken from the Soviet Project 1159 Del’fin (NATO reporting name: Koni)-class frigates. However, the shipyards Romania possessed were not capable of building a ship of that size, so the new class was shrunken down slightly. The result was the Amiral Petre Bărbuneanu-class, of which four were built:
- F-260 ROS Amiral Petre Bărbuneanu – Commissioned February 14, 1983
- F-261 ROS Viceamiral Vasile Scodrea – Commissioned January 3, 1984
- F-262 ROS Viceamiral Vasile Urseanu – Commissioned January 3, 1985
- F-263 ROS Viceamiral Eugen Roșca – Commissioned April 23, 1987
Constructed by the Santierul Naval 2 Mai shipyard in Mangalia, these ships became an integral part of the Romanian navy. After serving for 20 years, Viceamiral Vasile Scodrea and Viceamiral Vasile Urseanu would be decommissioned on 2004. Their places would be taken by the two vessels in the subsequent Rear-Admiral Eustațiu Sebastian-class. The other two remain in service to this day with the 50th Corvette Divizion in Mangalia, part of Fleet Command “Viceamiral Vasile Urseanu”.
Description:
Amiral Petre Bărbuneanu is just slightly smaller than the Soviet Koni-class it was based on, coming in at 93m (305 ft 1 in) long, 11.5m (37 ft 9 in) wide, and 3m (9 ft 10 in) deep, and weighing 1,385 tons standard and 1,600 tons fully loaded. Equipped with four 4,000 hp diesel engines powering four shafts for a total of 16,000 hp, she is able to reach a maximum speed of 24 kts (27 mph). She carries a crew of 98.
Regarding armor, there is light anti-fragmentation armor protecting the turrets and citadel.
The armament is similar to other Soviet frigates of this type, but it differs in a few ways. It retains the same primary armament: a pair of twin-barrel 76mm AK-726 naval guns. Firing both HE and HE-VT, these are highly effective against ships up to and including some early destroyers. They also make quick work of enemy aircraft. Aiding in the defense against airborne threats are two twin-barrel 30mm AK-230 CIWS and two quad-barrel 14.5mm MR4N heavy machine gun mounts. The AK-230s are mounted towards the stern of the ship while the MR4Ns are towards the bow. These guns combine to make an overwhelming amount of firepower, capable of eliminating any aerial threat as well as any small vessel trying to come in close. In addition, she carries a pair of twin-tube 533mm torpedo launchers, one on either side of the ship at the stern, as well as two 16-barrel 212mm RBU-2500 anti-submarine rocket mortars. Firing enormous high explosive rockets, these can critically damage or destroy ships in just a few seconds. They are mounted right behind the forward AK-726 turret.
