Aircraft Carriers - WT Discussion

Can gaijin please just give us playable aircraft carriers for the love of god it would be the best thing to naval and AAA guns.

Unironically, the Carriers would actually made the AA batteries matter on ships instead of being some way to get a cheeky kill at times (I did managed to kill a Sharn on Kron one time after it took out all my main and secondary ammo. Crew kill via anti-air guns, lol)

you know i hope that when carriers come to war thunder im gonna play the shit out them . i honestly think its going to be a lot of fun

Have there been any new updates about aircraft carriers lately? I saw some game file leaks a while back that showed animations of carrier jets folding their wings. Does that mean playable aircraft carriers are going to be added to the game soon?

No we are more likely to first get subs. Carriers will happen likely after a April fools event concerning command and control with Carriers.

The 9M311 missile component of the Kortik CIWS mounted on Admiral Kuznetsov is now functional !

2.57.1.29 → 2.57.1.30

Bvvd has confirmed the Type 003 -class, Fujian, will be added in the rough timeframe of sometime this year, as well as some other info regarding carriers:

While the fleet/era segment is probably referring more towards the escorting ships rather than the carriers thenselves, it 's possible that more post-WW2 carriers might be part of the plans anyway, especially since his other posts on the thread mention additional maps / scenarios are planned for deployment w/in the wider development of Nuclear Escalation.

There is also Sichuan which has a catapult I should make a suggestion as a spawn would act like a light carrier / Helicopter spawn.

With nuke mode going to get helicopters one day Helicopter landing docks will be a must.

Any of you think the Corn Belt Fleet could be added. They have no self defense but can launch aircraft.

USS Wolverine (IX-64)

12 to 20 aircraft max would make a good low tier carrier and sometimes the planes did use practice munitions here and there.
No defense so you got to be carful but I think there is a argument that it could work.
Ammo handling poor
no hanger depth
no armor
slow
old civil build
Sounds like a good meme machine

Nimitz vs Fujian is an interesting matcheup in terms of air defense.

Imo, Fujian has an advantage in self defense systems, with what appears to be:

  • 4x Type 1130 Golden Shield CIWS (30mm, RPM 10 000+ each)
  • 4x HHQ-10 missile systems (9km range, 6km alt, IIR guide, 24 tubes per launcher)
  • 4x systems I can’t quite figure out (potentially chaff launchers???)

Said AA setup should give it pretty capable defenses vs most munitions and likely capable of fending off saturation attacks from single aircrafts.

USS Nimitz on the other hand has what appears to be an inferior self defense setup, but a substantially improved capability to threaten jets at range, with an AA complement of:

  • 2x Phalanx CIWS (20mm, 4500rpm, effective range ~1500m, max range ~5000m)
  • 2x RIM-116 Rolling airframe missile (9km range, multimode seeker, 21 tubes per launcher)
  • 4x MK38 turrets (25mm, 180rpm, effective range ~2500m, max range ~6500m)
  • 2x Mark 29 launchers

The Mark 29’s are the key feature on the Nimitz imo. If they have basic old RIM-7 Sea Sparrows, they arent particularly interesting (~19km max range, SARH). If they come with RIM-162 ESSM on the other hand (~50km range (more like max 40km ingame), SARH), the Nimitz will have the edge in actually threatening aircrafts away from it.

Nimitz truly has a paltry self defense suite though imo. The Phalanx CIWS fire smaller rounds, at less than half the ROF, and likely at shorter ranges than the Fujians Golden Shield CIWS. The MK38’s dont make up for it either, with a slow ROF as well. Decent chance the Fujians Golden Shield CIWS are firing AHEAD rounds as well, much like the CS/SA5 in their ground tree in-game, which would give it even higher likelihoods of munition interception or evwn munition multikills.

Fujian also has self defense systems on all 4 corners while Nimitz appears to concentrate its one on the rear of the ship, leaving major gaps in self defense capabilities…

I know IRL CV’s are primarily protected by their escorts and not expected to rely on their own self defense systems, but thats not quite the case in-game, as Nuclear Escalation is a relatively small map in modern naval warfare terms, and has very low amouts of actual ships, 5x per side + 2x CV’s.

Speaking from experience, the ships arent particularly stellar at defending their carriers either, as they tended to sail away from eachother pretty commonly, leaving the carriers open to attacks.

It’ll be interesting to see where Gaijin goes with the naval aspect of Nuclear Escalation, along with which CV’s air defense setup proves most effective (my money’s on Fujians personally, both due to its systems, as well as the munitions it will face).

isnt it 21 tubes?

hopefully they meant nimitz class and add CVN-77 for an extra 20mm CIWS. ESSM i think will be enough of an advantage to make up for less short range stuff.

also there are more advanced versions of RIM-116 like block 2, which is a huge range maneuverability and guidance improvement (10nmi) and the Phalanx does get special rounds that increase its range.

if they do add ESSM block 2, it will be able to use both ship and active guidance with datalink.

Ya my mistake, fixed it, doesnt really change anything tho.

Maybe. ~40km range from in-game, or even 50km range isnt going to allow it to shoot down jets leaning into their AShM’s massive range advantage. A single chinese or russian jet could sling 6x AShM’s with over 100km range at the nimitz, or sling 6x ARMs with over 100km range to take out its radars. The lack of self defense capability will very likely allow it to be easily attrited and eventually sunk.

Could quite easily sling 2x Kh-31PD, 4x Kh-31AD, and then just close the distamce and nail the ship with either 1500kg or even a 3000kg bomb using the most common top tier REDFOR jet, the Su-30SM or SM2.

ESSM itself can shoot down missiles which can relieve some pressure on the shorter range systems like RAM and gun CIWS

Maybe, we’l have to see

Yeah but the question we all want to know is how is gaijin gonna make aircraft carriers playable is it gonna be like world of warships or are they gonna create there own thing. I mean I really hope they create there own thing. As far how it should be just like all tec trees this would have to fall under bluewater but have its own section in it will go ww2-cold war it will be interesting to what they do.

so i wanted to share a aircraft carrier video that was recorded in war thunder enjoy!

Hopefully we get naval helicopters especially for the future of Naval concerning sub hunting. People also forget cold war carriers do also have helicopters if Gaijin goes full modern. Poor Japan she just jumps from 1945 → 21st century helicopter dock maybe that cold war project if we really need something also she nearly bought a old USA carrier once.

Well technically they did say the new Wildcat (which is a naval helicopter already) that Britain is getting will get Sea Venom missiles in the future so high chance we see more naval helucopters to follow suit.

News from the devserver files, they added duplicates of all high-detail aircraft carriers for use by mission ai:
image

And a new behaviour for ai-controlled aircraft, called " carrierWingman ". It 's different from the carrierFighter, carrierBomber, and carrierDiveBomber behaviours which have already been added to both WT and WT Mobile, in that the sections that those have describing how to take orders from the player carrier 's airgroup controls have been removed.
