AIM-120D is just... wrong

We have the aim120D documents, we just can’t post here/bug reports lol

What documents lol.

But that’s what’s going to happen. The AIM-260 will be revolutionary, but the AIM-120D will remain classified because many people will continue to use it.

You know nothing about me actually.

It’s just very unlikely you have documents for any amraam.

Im really curious what they did with the aim260 to overcome the size limitations.

they removed the front fins to reduce drag

and increase range that way

Seekers on all fox 3 except the mica has the same seeker values so a and b model amramm doesnt have better seeker than aim 120d they all have the same seeker even the pl12 and r77

New propellant too if rumors are to be believed.

What is this source? Has this been used for a report yet?

It’s this document which was made by fans of DCS trying to create a better simulation of aim120 based on unclassified data. It holds no weight with gaijin and therefor cant be used. I’m skeptical that its even 100% accurate. The exact passage shown is on page 8.

Yeah it’s not

I mean, obviously it’s simulations, they can’t really be 100% accurate to reality.

In this particular case though, I am more concerned about the lack of a methods section or at least some appendix detailing the CFD setup and just by looking into a few of the pressure contours they displayed, I see a very poor resolution of the shockwaves which is normal given they didn’t seem to use any mesh adapting tools? They also didn’t provide any of the scaled residuals, mass/energy balance graphs, I mean honestly it kind of looks like this is a paper written by people who are new to at the very least compressible CFD.

Currently the only accepted 120d bug report is a weight increase

so aim120a A tier
aim120c C tier
aim120D D tier

ok guys I have an idea

currently the newer the amraam, the worse it is
what about idk… PREHISTORIC AMRAAM?!?one!!1!11???oneone!!!
ain’t there AIM-120 or something? ultra old, medieval even. Not A, B, C, D model bcuz apparently they are trash and US of A is the greatest marketing lie ever. Just plain AIM-120, the megamissile. Imagine the AoA, range and notch resistance… jesus that would be kinda op wouldn’t it???

ong

more like, 120a C tier
120c and 120d D tier

there is the prototype AIM-120 from 1982

The specific tool you are using is not an accurate simulation in the slightest. It can only be used in the relative comparison of missiles, and even there it often fails to be consistent with actual in-game testing. This is because the missile’s PID controller isn’t even used, which nearly erases the unique behavior of the missile. What it is doing isn’t an iterative simulation of a missile; it’s plugging numbers into a formula which is calculated only once.

PID terms are extremely important especially for long range. Missiles with the same ∆v, motor configuration, mass, drag etc, launched with the exact same parameters, but with different PID terms, will have drastical differences even against non-maneuvering target. This program, however, is basically same as launching a ballistic missile on a fixed course.
