I know my grammar isn’t the best but some of you really don’t read it. I stated that it’s practically useless in this game because jamming is so manageable but not in real life. I’m not saying jamming needs to be more random akin to the real world. I just thought there is no reason to not add it either. Because the real planes could do that. And yes, not all Mg151 equipped aircraft had this feature obviously. But there is no way of getting documents for all those independent aircraft, so applying it to basically all fighters would be fair. Also just look inside the cockpit by changing the view in-game. You’ll see these guns and the cocking levers are literally sticking out on some aircraft types.
You’re right :)
It’s a good point though, I do want to see more info about it. Maybe a list of some other nations or mechanisms that allow for this operation from inside the cockpit.
It would be nice to see the ability however, unless you provide examples on the potential duration, where this “Said button” is etc etc. It won’t happen anytime soon. Another thing is as everyone else has stated just don’t spam the trigger. Most pilots stopped holding down their triggers because they realized burst firing was significantly more efficient than holding it down. Since you have moments to lead your shots. Which means reading what the enemy pilots next move is.
If there is a way to unjam guns midflight IRL, then why not. But… If its only a handful of aircraft with the feature. Then its a kinda pointless addition and potentially unfair for other nations. Especially when the better solution is to just not jam your guns in the first place.
Crew skill and mods help with that as well.
I agree with this but it would be nice to be able to do like a couple snap rolls and have like a 20% chance to unjam their guns. I don’t know how realistic this is but instead of a button lets make it where you have to do a mauver
If a plane realistically had an ability to clear jammed guns mid air, it should be in game. There’s no feasible excuse to not strive for modelling as much real world functionality as reasonably possible in this game.
yeah agree. For example Do-17 bomber variants have a Mg 15 inside the cockpit so i think by logic these can be unjammned
OP is very specific which planes could do this historically (because the breech was in the pilots face in most cases) and could be enabled to do so in game. Idk why some people on this forum always insist on making everything into a skill issue fight. They’ve been selectively adding EFS, but if there’d been a thread first there’d have been some of the same people saying “no new mechanics, just don’t catch fire newb.”
Pointless. Guns in the game jam from overheating, in which case they are permanently inopperational until repaired on the ground.
The mechanic you describe for the MG 151 would just increase the reliability of the gun in general.
manually clearing a jammed gun that had overheating without any kind of inspection to the barrel could lead into the gun exploding so i’d say unless the pilot is very desperate he would leave the gun as is and not risk blowing a piece of the cockpit he’s inside
I voted no. While some crafts can if it’s mounted within the cockpit, most crafts cannot nor was there a way to do so.
Machine gunners clear jams all the time, overheating is just one factor. If the breech is exposed to manipulations air crew would be trained to do it themselves, otherwise they wouldn’t expose the breech face at all.
Machine gunners and plane gunners have more proper access to manipulate the guns they are handling
most plane cockpits with direct gun access only allow the pilot to clear and cock the gun while in the air at best
this does not take into account that maybe the barrel or the breech were damaged by overheating and could cause a catastrophic failure
OP mentions A6Ms as example

how would you clear and shoot again a heat damaged breech or barrel there?
sure you can try cocking the gun but you might risk it blowing on your face
For MG151
push a button to clear the loaded round → OOPS your overheated gun malfunctioned and made the barrel be obstructed → try to shoot it → best case scenario the gun becomes unusable
worst case, it blows up and takes a chunk of your plane
you seem to forget what heat and soot can do to guns
and thats just a small arms example with breaks in between reloads and in a cold enviroment
imagine trying to do that with continuous fire on a 20mm cannon, yeah if it stops shooting i wouldnt even try to unjam it mid flight
TL;DR: if you dont want to deal with overheating learn how to let go of the trigger
I don’t have a problem with holding trigger for more than 5 seconds. I don’t even know how long it takes to jam guns in this game because I never face the issue.
Depends on the weapon.
Most planes don’t. You’re looking at specific examples with nose-mounted guns that are exposed to the pilot. However, most planes didn’t have this. Some planes did have a button that could attempt to reset the cycling by rejecting the casing that failed to eject however this wasn’t always the case. Some planes such as P-47s, Mustangs(Depending on the variant/model), Spitfires, and Hurricanes didn’t have such features. Till later on and that’s if they did or not.
As long as its historically possible. Though depending on the method done to clear the jam there should be some RNG connected to your crew skill in the Weapon Maintenance department. For things like the A6M’s internal mgs is should be basically a 95% clear chance but if its for some sort of cannon clear system then there should be more of a chance of a full failure.
so technically, according to
there should be a time limit before they “cool down” and can be used again?
No, they jam because they were overheated.
Once jamed you need ground crews to unjam them.
Cooling down only prevents to happen jams in the first place.
Some guns could be unjamed in flight, electrically or pneumatically, but that was mostly to clear missfires.
Sometimes it could clear other jams, but if a gun jamed from overheating, the malfunction generally couldn’t be cleared by simply pulling the charging handle.
Some closed bolt guns, like US .50cals, could have their ammunition cook-off from getting to hot, firing until they eventually jam.
A lot of guns have a de-jam sistem so why not +1.
