Dragoon 300 LFV-2

Tanques-Blindados

History

Verne Corp began developing the Dragoon vehicle – originally known as the Dragoon 300 – in response to a U.S. Army specification for a light armored vehicle optimized for security applications. After the Army dropped the project, the contractor continued the program as a private venture. Arrowpointe Corp was formed as the dedicated marketing agent for the vehicle.
In 1984, Verne and Arrowpointe merged into a new firm, AV Technology Corp. Subsequently, in August 1995, AV Technology and Lockheed Martin formed AV Technology LLC to develop and market light armored vehicles (including the Dragoon) and armored vehicle turrets. When General Dynamics purchased the defense vehicle activities of Lockheed Martin, AV Technology (and the Dragoon line) became a component of General Dynamics Land Systems

Venezuela has been a particularly notable user of the Dragoon. Indeed, Venezuela’s Presidential Honor Guard Brigade includes a Motorized Cavalry Squadron equipped with Dragoon armored vehicles. The Honor Guard’s mission is to provide security to the Venezuelan president and his family.

In mid-1987, the first batches of Verne Corporation Dragoon 300 4x4 amphibious armored vehicles began to be received. These vehicles were purchased to equip motorized cavalry units, one of the variants was Dragoon 300 LFV-2, featured a two-seat turret fitted with a 90mm Belgian Cockerill Mk.3M-A1 cannon, a 7.62mm coaxial M-240 machine gun, and a smoke grenade launcher.

The Venezuelan Army’s major maintenance and modernization plan for its fleet of Dragoon vehicles is uncertain given the collapse of the Venezuelan economy.
The plan was part of a massive overhaul project, worth over $70 million, that the Venezuelan military announced in late 2013. The recovery and upgrade program for 300 vehicles was scheduled to last two years. In April 2014, the fist batch of parts was acquired, four years later, in April 2018, a new order was placed and several units were deliveered the following September. Work took place at the Army’s Armor Maintenance Center (CEMABLIN) located at Fort Paramacay in Valencia, Carabobo State.
Details regarding the modernization work on the Dragoon 300 LFV-2 have not been released, except that they will be equipped with a Pegasus Technologies thermal imaging camera mounted on the cannon as well as the AMX-13 C.90 and Scorpion 90
