I figure they’d possibly do that if necessary. Granted from reading on various military forums, I gather from what vets have said, if the crews ignored safety protocols they could definitely push out a lot more than 2rpm from the gun if necessary.
The 2rpm is most likely sustained RoF in an indirect fire role.
I just posted a request for american SPG’s too but nowhere near this in depth. Its not that I wouldn’t want to see this vehicle in game, but personally I wish we could have a few other additions first or a line of arty vehicles. The ones I really want to see are the M41 HMC, M12 GMC, and the M40 GMC. These would be mobile, ammunition limited glass cannons that would have a good gun and mobility but not be OP. I would like to see them because the playstyle would be very fun to me and a big one is adding fire support to help deal with heavier armor after volumetric. What do you think about this?
I’d like to see all those too. I just haven’t had time to suggest them for the US tree. I know the guns on the M12 and M40 can use most of the same ammunition as the M46 gun here, except the VT-fuzed shells, as I don’t think those came out till post-war.
They can since it was in the NATO standard but I’m pretty sure the AP rounds were out of service by the time the M109 was around. You could probably justify giving it to a standard US M109 but probably not any foreign 155mm NATO SPHs. Then again, Gaijin does like to flub around with giving vehicles ammunition they never fired. So there is some hope.
The Howitzer in the M109 can’t fire the M112 AP shell. Different driving band setup, etc, and out of service by the time it entered service… However, I have recently got my hands on some complete round charts and artillery ammunition tables from pre WW2 through lates 70s iirc. And according to the ones that list the 155mm M46(T80) Gun, it can indeed fire the M107 HE and other shells that the 155mm M45 howitzer fires. So it would have access to HE shells with VT fuze and more powerful filler.
Would like to see this and/or the M55. I just was on a restored M55 and it is a LARGE vehicle. When I go back to the museum I’ll take pictures. Awesome vehicle. +1
Also, well made suggestion. This thing would probably sit higher than the in-game M109’s with that AP shell lol.
Please forgive the edit bumps, I’m updating the formatting layout as I have time, and also adding new information on ammunition after that. Working on Redoing the Spec section layout, but haven’t got the table set up to my liking yet. The current version is what I use to use on the old forum.
Just to add,
The T97 Gun Motor Carriage prototype mounted the T80 gun, which had the muzzle brake and longer barrel and supposedly higher muzzle velocity.
T53 SPH mounted the M46 155mm gun i.e without muzzle brake.
Yea, I am aware of the printed info but,
Read somewhere, that a T97 Gun Motor Carriage prototype mounting a T80 variant had a higher velocity and was tested as a possibility of being a tank destroyer, with ability to fire HEAT.
Going by what I have on the 155mm ammunition and gun prototypes through the 50s… That would most likely be the 155mm T180 Gun. Which was a 155mm Gun based on the 155mm T7 from the T30 heavy tank that was modified to be used with the gun mount and auto loader system for the T58 Heavy Tank.
The 155mm M2, T7, T180, and M46(T80) guns are all technically derivatives developed from the 155mm/L40 M1 Gun. The M2 has a slightly larger chamber volume than the M1’s. The T7 and T180 are designed to use Cased ammunition.
There indeed was a HEAT-FS (?T267) and HEP (T152) round developed for the T180 Gun, note the other M1/M2 based guns could also fire the HEP round.
Yea but I think T180 is not much different ballistically from the T7 … its just that it was modified to fit inside the T58 Heavy tank and fire HEAT(non-FS) and HEP/HESH
Also I recall, not sure, A higher velocity gun was considered for T58 but the idea was scrapped as T180 was enough, as it was meant to fire only chemical energy rounds.
