I'm  pretty disappointed that both WarGamming and now War Thunder can't rise to the challenge of coming up with a way to include submarines.

 

Submarines are the exact opposite of what both WG & GJ need for their respective financial success.

Slow.

 

Both F2P companies have stated that their main audience is the male mid-thirtie ex-gamer who is easy to attract with a "quickie" style game promise due to IRL constraints.

 

Starting up SH3@GWX after a day in the office, when the kids are in bed finally and there are those famous last 1.45 hours of the day?

Just to get out of Wilhelmshaven in real time.

Nope.

 

Squeezing in a quick flight or tank battle while ma'am is getting ready to go wherever or that famous "just one battle before office"?

Sure thing.

 

Granted there are hundreds of more player types out there - but those are the ones paying the loot up to 75% (WG figures from Kisely@spiegel.de, dunno how trustworthy those numbers are...)

 

And that's what Crag_r is circling around, an arcade-ish compatible game play for submarines that isn't completely stupid and unbelievable, that takes place in a 10-30min timeframe just ain't going to happen.

It is hard enough with battle ships already.

I've seen those WoWS game play videos - not attracted at all.

Over water rail shooter on Ritalin... with ship models straight from Destroyer Command 1.0 - no thanks.

 

Submarines COULD have their passive role like truck convois, trains or bridges in the game, but player controlled... not without leaving that thin red line WT is balancing on so successfully.

Could everybody please stop referring SH4&5 for any purposes?

The series officially stopped at 3, we don't talk about "the others"...

Really? I liked 4 a lot. I've got 5, but I don't really play it too much. It feels like they did the same thing they did to all the new driving games where you just want to race, but you have to spend 10 minutes getting to the location of the race, which is dumb as hell.

Not really. In fact all SH/DC battles where I participated were 1-1.5 hours long included navy battles and convoy battles.

But WT multiplayer allow to create and play so long scenarios as custom battles.

 

Generally there are many subsim fans who wait for interesting navy gameplay. Subs as premium extra paid units for those missions and for fans are not stupid idea - especially when the sub-mechanics may be copied for US, USSR, German, Japanese, Italian, French, British subs...

and "collect them all".

if subs were ever added, they would have to be added at a forward base closer to the middle of the map sort of thing so that the transit time until they got in range of the enemy ships would be reduced.  They should arrive in contact with enemy ships shortly before the main battalion arrives, as they could have transmitted the location back or something like that.  They should not start in contact with enemy ships, but close enough to them so that there is about a minute or so sub ride to get in contact.  With that being said.  Planes with depth charges would need to be added as a torpedo runs too close to the surface to hit a sub.  they would be limited in depth in arcade and possibly other modes also, to periscope depth as you do not want to have chase over the map for the last AI or player sub that is hiding 100s of feet down.  I would personally make them indestructible by any other means than depth charges when submerged. give planes with depth charges and boats as sub hunters something to do.  If they surface, they are a free for all, bombs, torpedoes, and large caliber guns.  don't know about the machine guns taking out the sub, but they should be able to "knock out" the personal manning the gun on the sub.

it was stated in one Q&A session that Submarines will not be included at the begining of naval.

So maybe they will appear on a mid term future?

Submarines can be added but there are some reasons why i don´t think we will see them. I played silent hunter 4 which i think is the best simulator of submarine war on the pacific. You can´t put submarines on simulator battles of war thunder because you need a lot of time to find the enemy, posicionte your submarine and calculate a solution for the torpedo, and your objetive should be static or moving in a straight line. For arcade or HB you can simplify the solution for the torpedo but a ww2 submarine can´t be all the time under the water and it is very slow.

And if you go on the surface you still aren't all that fast, have only a single small-caliber deck gun, and even a lowly 5" shell from a destroyer could potentially inflict fatal damage to the pressure hull, preventing you from diving to escape.

Mini submarines would be interesting, but yeah I think they would work only on some maps. Maybe on those maps players could choice to be a mini-sub instead of whatever they picked. In the example video I posted though, you can imagine, most mini-subs wouldn't be able to do anything.

If I good remember the midget submarines were shown at the Battlestations: Midway.

I was good play & fun...

why not submarine, do you know about a game released in 90's called battleship chess ?

 

This can help you to understand how can be balanced a submarine in a game with naval fight (this game was perfectly balanced between the ships)

 

Anyway, if submarine are there, you need depth charge also and depthcharge on planes also, so a lot of modifications in the game.

 

It 's difficult !!

 

The idea to compare with battleship chess is not to promote it but to compare to what have been done before and to inspire devs in a good way.

 

Balance the game is the most difficult I presume.

 

The role of submarine in game could be only to make some ambush somewhere, and I don't know if waiting 10 minutes for a target will be playable...

I'm surprised no one has completely jumped the shark and suggested ITALIAN SLC craft or British X craft yet. ; p

If PT boats were introduced Japan would be in a bad way; most engine designs were not able to produce the power needed, ~25 knots or lower was a common result with few outliers. Edited by Iridium80

I love playing as submarine. But in fleet engagement, no. Just one destroyer is more than enough problem to me.

If I be spawn in same place as the other. I cant get into ambush position in time. Hell, even battleship is going out run me in my max surface speed.

And I don't think spawning in middle of the map is good ideal. It'll ruin the fog of war.

the other is my armament is a joke. Gun that on par with frigate and half of destroyer torpedo tube. Which also take ages to reload.
