Head Mouse for those without TrackIr/Oculus Rift/FreeTrack

I saw some guys tormenting themselves with hat switch or mouse as devices used to look around in FRB.

Well until u will be determined if u wanna buy a TrackIr / Oculus Rift or spend time and build some device to use it with Freetrack toghether u can try this.

Compared with FaceTrackNoIr this doesn't eat CPU and doesnt crash but u can look only Up/Down Left/Right (it will be enaugh for a start until u buy a serious device)

-So first thing to do is to is to set your FRB setup so u can look around with your mouse.

-Then go here http://nipg.inf.elte.hu/headmouse/headmouse.html and download this free program which will allow u to move your mouse cursor with your head.

-Now the webcam is the thing which will stay in your way so the settings are crucial, and u will have to spend a few minutes until u are satisfied. Giving the fact that there are thousands of webcams the settings will probably be different, so i will be short.

-Well "Exposure" its a tricky thing because if u make it higher the frames will drop, but if u will make it lower the frames will be increased but the mouse will shake, so u will have to find the "middle way" which will be good for u.

-Lower your sensitivities but keep the vertical one higher (the screen has usually the width higher then the height but again, u might have a different monitor)

-I discovered recently that unchecking light boosters and stuff like that will improve the FPS and u will be able to decrease the exposure even more:

fkk9.jpg

-For the guys who have webcams with RightLight technologyes (like some Logitech webcams), take that off! That will increase you're FPS even more

-Then go to War Thunder\Menu\Controls\Mouse Sensitivity and mess around with it until u like it. in the Head Mouse software keep the sensitivity as lower as possible, calibrate the sensitivity of the mouse just in game.

Very important:

---This method will not bring u the same quality as TrackIr.

---Setup up a button on your joystick to recenter the camera, at some sudden movements u will mess your view and in combat u do that often, so this button is crucial.

U have to do 2 things in order to gain that button:

1-Go to Controls->Controls Setup Wizard (bottom left)->Full Aircraft Controls->Skip all the settings until u reach the View Controls->Yes-> then skip to Center the view automatically?-> press No-> Re-center the camera - here u sett your button

2-Put the same button on Toggle view as on Re-center the camera (on FRB u are blocked in real cockpit view when u fly anyway so dont worry)

---When your pilot doesn't turn the head enaugh, instead of increasing the sensivity, try to lean your head in that direction,

---Your face have to be good lighted

Now u can try some FRB  and if u will like it maybe u will invest some money in a proper device.

Have a safe flight!

Any webcam.

U move the mouse cursor on your desktop with your head. But u dont have to do that all the time, activate the program just when u are in FRB.

wait so the program moves the mouse through a camera? if i follow correctly.

You can also try Facetracknoir, the FaceAPI plugin is surprisingly good if you have a good! cam and stable light conditions. I tried it in Clod singleplayer with a PS3Eye. After some curve tuning, it never lost track of my face and was very accurate at low face deflection angles.

You do get less accuracy at high face deflection angles, compared to an IR LED setup. But you don't wanna twist your neck too much to look above/behind, so you'll want tight curves and small face angles anyway.

And you can easily upgrade this setup with a trackclip pro or homemade IR LED device.

Ah okay I understand. The cam is moving the mouse by tracking the face directly. I was just confused before as to what the input was.

yes, but some of my friends and me included had problems with it, sometimes FacetrackNoIr is freezeing, or loose track of your face at sudden moves even with a good FPS cam, and the to "retrack" your face is lasts several seconds, crucial in a battle. One friend told me that sometimes his pilot is just looking at his.... shoes, even without him making a move.

With this thing u regain control on "your face" immediately.

I use the tit on my joystick to look. Tho it only looks directly left/right/top. So far Im pretty much limited to flying orbits over and area or trimming using my keyboard and moving to mouse after trimming.

I might give this method a quick go.

Yes, i updated the post, get rid of the light boosters or RightLight technology, u will be able to decrease the exposure even more, which will increase you're FPS without any shacking of the mouse (not to mention that the loosing RightLight technology will improove the FPS). Its a huge FPS advantage over softwares like FaceTrackNoIr, and the cam isn't loosing the track of your face so... get your ass in FRB right now!

  • 4 weeks later...

Bump because this is a really really good head tracker, so bad they don'take one for just gaming thus doesn't move the mouse. Because it does an amazing job tracking the head.

Its the best head mouse tracker out there its very precise, but i have a problem, it always closes my game and opens that program like every 10 seconds, anyone knows how to fix it? like i start my engine i look around and then it minimizes my game...

I find this head tracker very good. It achieved more fps than FacetrackNoIR, so it is more stable in not perfect light condition.

This is actually a pretty cool idea, too bad i dont have a camera. WASD works for me though, i have it where it moves smoothly and stays still until i reset it.

Realman.....you can get a rebuilt PS3 Eye cam for $10bucks at EB games stores. Prob any gaming store that sells the likes of Xbox and such should have them. Place I got mine had plenty extra hanging on a pegboard.

does it work if you're wearing glasses?

Yes, it works.

Some thoughts on this. It is much more responsible than FaceNoIR, no lag.
I found some cons:

* there are no dead-zones so it is hard to keep stable picture during targeting.

* coursor is shaking, so picture sometimes too.
