DxDiag and what it's all about

this is going to be a -let's say- Guide on DxDiag...

DxDiag is the DirectX diagnosis tool of Microsoft - it is part of every Windows Operating System which got DirectX installed (so basically every Win System)

it is used to troubleshoot / identify DirectX problems but also gives a very detailed insight into the Windows System (hardware and drivers)

often Developers ask for dxdiag logs, not only to see if there's a problem on the user's PC (like outdated or missing drivers) but also to get a general idea

of the systems' performance and the hardware overall which sometimes (or often) makes it more easy to pinpoint a specific issue or at least gives hints

about where it is coming from.

so lets get into it...

How do I make/create a dxdiag report ?

there are several ways to start the dxdiag tool... this would be one (and most likely the commonly used) way to start dxdiag:

(it may look different on your Windows system (i use Win8) but at least similar enough that you should get it ^^)

either you hit Win+R (windows button + R) to open a command prompt or you click the Start-Button and type directly into the search field (this applies to

Win XP, Vista and 7 - since you dont have a Startmenu on Win8 (yet) its slightly different. on Win8 you have to right-click the start-button to make a menu

apear. in that menu you can select 'run' to open a command prompt)

it looks (something) like this:

nDly7GO.jpg?1  uFhiyMJ.jpg?1

once you've opened the command prompt (or the Start menu) you type 'dxdiag' into the prompt or the seach field and hit enter

eVnv86q.jpg?1

if you run the tool for the first time it will most likely ask you if you want to allow it to check your drivers for the WHQL logo. WHQL is a quality test or

a certification of Microsoft which should assure the compatibility of certain drivers with Windows. it's up to you if you want to do this - it will open a

connection to the Microsoft and compare your drivers with their WHQL driver database. these additional infos may be important since drivers that

haven't been tested (beta drivers or modified drivers for instance) may cause problems.

dxdiag will now start to collect data

hPtCJWe.jpg

it will be finished once the progress bar has disappeard

now you can save the informations in a report (the dxdiag.txt file) via the button at the bottom of the dxdiag window (Save All Information...)

69ZToP2.jpg

usually the default save folder for the dxdiag.txt will be the desktop but you may choose any other folder (just be sure you will find it again ^^)

if you chose the desktop you will see something like this->1hxHdWp.jpg?1

you may have a look into the file yourself by just doubleclicking it... if you dont have a default program set to open txt-files Windows will ask you

which application you want to use to open that file... the standard Editor (or Notepad) which is part of every Windows system will do

it should be looking something like this (slightly different on WinXP, Vista, 7)->CYeZqzQ.jpg?1

and this is what you get

906iPxS.jpg?1

as you can see there are pretty much all necessary informations about your system listed in this file... usually it is a pretty long file with many

informations including all hardware devices integrated or attached to the PC as well as the drivers they use. sometimes at the end of the file

there will be a list of Windows Errors from the Windows Event log...

you can now either attach this log file to your posts (if you've been asked for them by Mods or Devs for instance) or mark them all up (Ctrl+A)

and copy/paste them into a message (Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl-V to paste them in)

troubleshooting and additional infos

it is very useful when ALL driver versions are listed in the dxdiag log - unfortunately often they aren't... this may happen due to either running

the 'wrong' version of dxdiag and/or the tool hasn't been run with administrator privileges...

in the following picture you can see what happens if you run the 32bit version of dxdiag on a 64bit Operating System

qvyX42q.jpg

in the lower part you can see that the system devices are listed but on the driver part it says 'n/a' - not available

to prevent this from happening you should first try to see if you got the 'run 64bit DxDiag' button on your dxdiag as shown in one of the pictures

above else you have to start dxdiag in the command prompt with the /64bit option: start -> run -> dxdiag /64bit

also it might help to run dxdiag with administrator priviliges which isnt that easy just because there isnt an Icon on the desktop or in the Windows

menu where you can just right-click the file and choose 'run as Administrator'... you have to locate the file first to do this... the default path to

dxdiag is c:\windows\system32.... you got to navigate there and then right-click dxdiag and 'run as Administrator':

MTg1VoK.jpg

however if you use the WinVista/7 search field to run dxdiag (instead of the command prompt) you can use the 'run as Administrator' option directly

hope this helps some people to a) get a better understanding of DxDiag and b) make it more easy to find and run it

lets talk about dxdiag again ^^ while this was meant to be a quick guide into dxdiag reports for staff members who try to help users

(mainly the technical moderators) this might also be of interest to some user who want to learn more about the technical side of

their PCs (or systems in general)

------------------
System Information
------------------
Time of this report: 4/7/2014, 15:57:02
       Machine name: NOTEBOOK
   Operating System: Windows 8.1 64-bit (6.3, Build 9600) (9600.winblue_gdr.131030-1505)
           Language: German (Regional Setting: German)
System Manufacturer: Acer
       System Model: Aspire E1-571G
               BIOS: V2.17
          Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2328M CPU @ 2.20GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.2GHz
             Memory: 8192MB RAM

System DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent)

     DxDiag Version: 6.03.9600.16384 64bit Unicode

so what do we have here ?

1. the Operating System: the OS itself, the service pack and bit version

this is interesting to look at because for instance many people dont have the latest service packs installed which isnt good at all

the bit version is interesting because of the DxDiag version used (explained later) and the maximum of usable memory  - on 32bit

system you can only get up to ~3.2GB while on 64bit versions anything between 16GB-192GB is possible.

2. the processor - usually a quick look is enough to know if it is sufficient, maybe if it is a mobile (laptop) processor and if it got an

    integrated GPU

3. memory - yet again... just a quick look because 2GB is pretty low nowadays and might cause troubles because user run out of memory

quite fast. also sometimes you'll see something like 8GB installed but only 3.2GB available (due to a 32bit system)

4. DxDiag version - this is kinda important - if the 32bit version of dxdiag is run to gather the informations on a 64bit OS version it will NOT

be able to gain all informations (like drivers in the system driver tabs!)

these are the (most or even only) interesting informations in a dxdiag report usually since it shows all the major details of the

videocard and graphics system... USUALLY... this DxDiag is specifically interesting since it's made on a laptop with an integrated

GPU (from the CPU) and a dedicated videocard. dxdiag does not put them both in this area and it will always only show the 'first'

or main GPU which is the integrated one - the dedicated videocard will only be shown in the system driver area further down -.-

on systems with 2 main videocards like a crossfire or sli system however it will show both of them in this area.

so what is interesting in this part ?

1.  the GPU itself of course - it gives a general idea about the GPU power overall and also if this is for instance a fairly outdated

GPU (or anything special like for instance the CAD cards like nVidia Quadro or AMD firegl cards etc)

2. the display memory and dedicated memory - the display memory is the overall available display memory which is a combination

of the dedicated memory (the memory of the videocard itself) and the shared memory (which is basically taken from the normal

memory installed on the system) - again this is a good example... 128MB dedicated memory is really really low. even though due

to the shared memory the overall display memory is good enough to play this game the performance will greatly suffer since the

textures etc have to be transfered between the (rather slow) system memory and the videocard.

3. screen mode: not really that important but sometimes the game looks weird (like blurred fonts etc) because the game is running

in a lower resolution than the 'native' resolution of the monitor. also to compare systems or FPS between different systems you

also need to take the screenmode into account - a system with a resolution of 1368 x 768 will have a better FPS than the same

system with a resolution of 1950*1080 because the videocard has to calculate (way) less pixels.

4. the driver date (or version) - while most of the times most people dont know the current 'version' it's the driver date which can

give an indication about 'outdated' drivers... while i'd usually say 'never touch a running system' at least once someone got

graphic problems or (FPS) performance problems a driver update can (and often will) help.

nothing really interesting in here ^^ maybe if you are looking for a specific videocard because you cannot identify it by the name (this may

happen if for instance just something like AMD HD 58xx series is given) you can lookup the exact videocard by googling the Vendor ID +

the Device ID... all the RGB videoprocess informations are kinda uninteresting ^^ and usually the last five lines pretty much show what is

shown here - on old WinXP system or on rather old videocards (especially AGP cards (do they still exist ?!? oO)) this may be worth having

a look in... but meeeeh oldskool ;)

Poll w/ Interrupt: No

direct input devices... mice, keyboards, joysticks, sometimes 'virtual' joysticks (e.g. iPhone) - not really interesting as well

though sometimes some devices might interfere with each other (on WT at least) like there have been reports of some

Razer devices made the game crash when they were both connected (should be solved by now) but still sometimes it's

worth having a look into this to see if some devices are known to cause problems or if they could just be removed (temporarily)

to make sure they arent causing problems ^^

this section is the first to get an idea if the system/mainboard drivers are up to date and also if there is something

weird about the USB configuration - like several USB hubs cascaded behind each other.

nowadays this section is usually empty since even joysticks get put into the directinput section further up.

only old joysticks or gamepads are listed here

in this section at the HDD part there will be shown something like ATA device which MAY indicate that there is something

wrong with the SATA controller drivers or the windows setup. if someone is experiencing bad performance, very long

loading times or the HDD LED is pretty much always on this might explain why.

also in the list of CD-Roms there will often be (sometimes several) virtual CD-Rom drives... Daemon Tools for instance is

a widely used virtual CD/DVD-Rom tool to run disk images from the HDD. these tools did cause some troubles in the past

(for instance did they grab the .bin extension which might get those files 'locked' and unable to update in the WT folder)

so if someone got problems with updating the client it might be worth uninstalling those tools for the update (disabling

isnt enough)

this part is quite informative... first - you will only see the driver versions in this area if the correct version of dxdiag was used !

if you run the 32bit version of dxdiag on a 64bit OS it will only show the name of the device in this section.

in this section the dedicated videocard will apear (if you got a laptop) so it's always needed too look for a videocard in here as

well and check the driver version.

the rest 'just' shows the standard system devices (motherbord devices) but most of the times the drivers are outdated in this

section - usually this doesnt really matter but it might help to raise the system performance if you install the latest motherboard

chipset drivers. in some cases for the correct identification and usage of the harddrives the SATA AHCI driver needs to be up

to date.

unfortunately it seems like AMD doesnt really care for this drivers (i havent found any updates or such for AMD chipsets) but

uses the windows drivers generally... only one driver seems to get updated automatically by the windows update =/

intel chipset drivers get updated quite often so on intel systems they should be at least somewhat actual ^^

also one of the most neglected drivers are the network card drivers >< especially when it comes to connection problems or

latency/packet loss issues this would be once place to look if the drivers are up to date!

this section is only available on Win8 systems (afaik) and only if there have been crashes on windows

this is kind of an extract of the windows error log and might actually show quite a few of different errors

which might indicate a general problem with the OS or sometimes shows specific tools/programs that are

known to cause troubles and the user may consider uninstalling them or have a look into it.

most of the times these informations are useless and can be skipped though

that it (for now) folks

v0.1 - 07.04.2014 first 'quick and dirty' version ^^
