Stuttering / FPS Drop / Load Spikes Issue - RTX 3090 Build - Returning Player

Just returned for the first time since 2017 on a new PC - having major issues with WT specifically (an issue I don't have with other games since building this PC over a year ago), mostly stutters on menu and in game / random GPU negative load spikes coinciding with stutters / frame drops. Gets worse on snow maps.

I play 2560x1440 getting around 150 fps or more even on ultra settings but have also tried the lowest settings and the problem still persists.

CPU / RAM usage etc are all normal during play sessions.

My build is:

- Intel Core i9-9900k (Overclocked)
- Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 FE (Stock)
- ASUS ROG MAXIMUS XI Hero
- 32GB Corsair Vengeance (4 x 8) DDR4 3600MHz
- CORSAIR RM850x PSU
- Liquid cooled

I've done stress testing again using Heaven Benchmark / UNIGINE Superposition which seem fine; albeit scores not setting the world alight, but should be comfortably good enough for most games.

https://www.getdroidtips.com/war-thunder-stuttering-lags-freezing/

I followed all the suggestions from reddit posts and the above link - changed all my Nvidia control panel settings / turned off V-Sync / clean uninstall of all drivers & physX etc / removed geforce experience and re-installed drivers manually / tried running WT via client instead of Steam - none of these things helps fix the issue completely (although stutters are less frequent now).

I have also followed some suggestions from my recent reddit post comments such as try turning on V-Sync in nvidia control panel / in-game and changing the anti-aliasing / DLSS settings but none made any difference.

The only thing I noticed was GPU load decreased a lot from 99-100% down to 60-80% when changing AA settings to HQ FXAA from TAA; but the stutters will still very prevalent.

Screenshot below to show GPU load every time there's a stutter, which is audibly noticeable when it happens (as well as the obvious in game stutter / FPS drop).

Running out of ideas here :(

Never had any issues in the past on my old Nvidia 670 and 1080 GPU's so I'm really not sure what is going on here.

I've seen people saying it's a War Thunder issue but surely there's a fix? A lot of vague suggestions on the forums here that don't seem to fix it.

Obviously super frustrating trying to get back into WT but being hindered by this constant stuttering, ruins the experience unfortunately.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: I also noticed people talking about core usage bottlenecking causing stutters - appears I have this same issue but I can't find a suitable fix.

I'm having the same issue. It repeatedly freezes and eventually hard crashes. This has been happening ever since the Christmas Update on my end.

Since apex predators I also experience regular FR drops. I play on 4k with 60-70 FPS constantly before, but now it drops to 20 FPS for several seconds. Funny enough, I have this issue in naval in every battle, but in ground only rarely... turning down the setting even to ulq does not change anything.

For me I've been experiencing high FPS stuttering when I reach close to the ground in air RB and even moving to a new location in ground RB I start to have frame drops when rendering. Goes from 140+ FPS to 30 or 40 for about 4 to 5 seconds. I've launched a forum about this two or three days ago. No reply from anyone about this and it's damn annoying ah. I've even sent my dxdiag on the forum but ofc lah people enjoy Christmas and New year too much already almost Chinese New year yet they never come online and help.

Heavy Compliment for the **** laziness since war thunder is at the moment the only game I play because I don't want to relearn or get used to playing xxxx "be open to everything" Western xxxx new games.

I want to grind and reach my goal in this game which I've been trying to reach since 2019 whilst busy with studying at the time from IGCSE to now diploma in electrical engineering.

My specs are:

Ryzen 7 4800H

GTX 1660ti 6gb

24gb RAM

(If you want the model of my computer for whatever reason it's an Asus TUF A15 FX506iu. Had the computer since 2020)

For me it's like one big stutter for max 0.5-1 second (enough that it got me killed 3 times yesterday when I peeked a corner to shoot and got a stutter); and it happens completely sporadically.

It's gotten worse as well but I've changed / tried so many settings that I'm not sure what's made it get worse. I've tried to revert everything back to what it was but no joy.

Originally it was noticeably worse on snow maps but now it's basically all maps.

The lack of responses (helpful ones) is quite frustrating - mostly people just regurgitating the same generic G-Sync / V-Sync and AA settings advice, which didn't help at all.

I started wondering if somewhere my system was bottlenecking performance or something and causing the stutters; but my specs are so high that it surely can't be the case? None of my system tests suggest any performance bottlenecks.

It repeatedly gets me killed. My game will run completely fine, and out of nowhere: 1 FPS and Audio Distortion for 5 seconds at a time. It happens continuously, regardless of graphics settings. I run 60 FPS on MAX Movie settings for the record. I turned OFF DLSS, Super Sampling, but to not avail. Apex Predators is responsible.

I might have found a solution for some people, needs testing from others.

I have a fairly similar build to @BarnieM and would run at around 150 fps 1440p:

Ryzen 7 3800X

RTX 3090 (MSI GAMING X TRIO)

MPG X570 GAMING EDGE WIFI

32GB DDR4 3200MHz

I have been having very similar stuttering to this for about half a year (maybe more/less don't remember when it started):

Very short spikes, sometimes one, other times maybe 2-3 in a row. It would basically only happen in air battles (or I didn't notice it in ground but I doubt that) and specifically when getting close to other players. I've had countless instance where just after lining up a shot from a dive on someone I would freeze around the moment I would shoot (just before or after) leading me to miss the kill.

Another frequent instance would be when getting close to the ground either when strafing AI or when taking off.

All these would be, for some reason, amplified in test drive which had the absolute worst cases. Sometimes 5-10 consecutive freezes that would last 0.5 - 2s each.

Since I wasn't really sure if anything I would do would work I didn't take notes on all the steps I took but I believe these are all of them:

1. Uninstalled all 3 texture DLC's on steam:

image.png.8c0b937ff06b77cee782bb5b6156b1

2. Emptied my UserSkins folder (was 7.54GB) and turned off as much additional content as possible:

image.png.46c80bdf8f757b6ac644b7211a7a1c

3. Lowered texture quality from HIGH -> LOW (reverted back explanation at the end)

and shadow quality from LOW -> MINIMUM

4. Lowered cloud quality (in flight) from 100 -> 50

and terrain quality from 100 -> 0

5. Far terrain details OFF

6. Changed GPU fan curve to keep temps lower.

Peaks during testing:

GPU Core temp 62.2 C

GPU Memory temp 74 C

GPU Load 70%

7. Disabled WTRTI (WarThunder Real-Time Information)

And these are my current settings:

image.png.f13c4a9476f73c76ab1aa022879df6

As you can see I reverted the texture quality back to high after not seeing any freezes after 3 games and some test driving. As I'm writing this I've seen maybe 2 tiny freezes in test drive but nothing like before. I don't know how this will hold after more playtime and I'm not sure which (if any) of my changes did what.

I will try to post here again if the big stutters come back again without changing my settings.

Same here with 7900XTX, Game runs with 100FPS with everything maxed out.

Only this damn stutters all the Time.

Graphics Driver ist the Newest 7900 Adrenaline. Other Games have zero Issues

  • 1 month later...

I have been having the same problems with my new rtx 3060 12gb card. I have a pretty good pc. with a AMD Ryzen 5600g however the game feels jittery at even 150fps as a average. It has been this way for like a year and I just got this new pc and card and it is still fricking like this! Its like the devs don't care anymore.
