Crew die easily and my tank is helpless

Hi. I'm new to War Thunder.

I find my crew die on the first hit, and it takes so long to replace them my tank sits there helpless and just dies from the next shot.

How to remedy this?

I also find repairs take so long and experience similar issue to above - what's the point in having repairs if your tank is sitting duck. By time repair is almost finished my tank is made helpless again.  It's a vicious cycle.  Feels like sometimes better off to die outright.

Hey OP, I'm no long time player but I suggest to idk... delete the game Just don't rush, look around when you're moving in the open, rely to your teammates as meat shields or let them go 1st you can always kill steal (unfavorable but viable), Just find a decent spot where you're okay with waiting for people to pass

Gain experience in gameplay. Gain crew experience to increase crew skills. Keep at it, the game has a steep learning curve. It also helps to have friends to squad with who know the game  but even if they don't, organized squads tend to perform better via cooperation.

Don't expect things be too easy at first. It'll take some time.

Certainly don't want things to be "easy" - game would be boring.

But the frequency with which my driver or gunner get killed can be quite frustrating as the tank is helpless and more often than not just gets destroyed anyway.

Any specific crew skills I should concentrate on?  Obviously Vitality -but - after sinking in one point the cost goes up dramatically. Is it worth it to spend the extra for 2nd Vitality before spending points on the other skills?  Or is it better to cover all bases before repeating a skill?

1) Reload

2) Targeting (Turret + Gun both move at the same time - horizontal/vertical --> less time to get on target --> higher chance of not getting hit)

3) Rangefinding (especially for realistic battles --> increases speed / range - up to 1200m / accuracy)

4) Leadership

5) Repair + Vitality + Agility  (are divided by all Crewmembers -> 1 section on 5 Crewmembers is worth the same as 5 sections on 1 crewmember, but cheaper)

6) everything else

Always take the cheapest option, as every point spent give you a "crewlevel" which u will need to buy the Expertcrew (which costs silverlions, but is worth for every vehicle which you like / playing for a longer period of time).

-> the higher the Tank, the higher the Crewlevel need to be to purchase the Expertcrew.

--> a Expertcrew gives u 3 sections of a lot of skills instantly and unlock the "research" of a free Goldcrew / Mastercrew .

Obviously Vitality

Even a fully skilled Crew will die in 1 Shot if the ammotype + impactpoint is well chosen. Vitality is not useless but more important on Aircraft, as u only have 1 Pilot (most of the time), and it will save you from a direct 12.7mm hit.

-> in War Thunder you should avoid to get hit in the first place, relying on Armor is a bad idea (except you exactly know what u are doing), rather see it as "insurance".

If you will concentrate on Arcade "Keen Vision" is also worth mentioning, as it will increase your dedectionrange to "spot" enemy players --> "red" Nametag -- also correlates with the "Visibility" property in the Tankstatcard.

I am quite new too.

I played other Tank games like WoT for years though.
Easy practice to avoid getting killed to fast are:
1. Your Tanks Armor is the strongest at the front side.

2. The Driver often sits in the front right or front left and not in the middle. Check via X-Ray in the Main Menu where they sit. In Combat you then face the enemy in a slightly off angle by just a few ° so there will be less direct hits which result in crew kills
3. Use Mountains, Buildings or even Sand bags to peek over. Drive up, aim, shoot, drive down, repeat.

4. Never stay in one place and avoid open areas. Even a tree can make the difference.

This!

Beware of the walls/buildings which allow certain types of rounds to go right through them!

Learn how to shoot down planes with other than SPAAs.  USA tanks are often good , with several machine guns.

You have to take advantage of the air game to make the maximum points, but you leave your tank for up to 60 seconds, so it is a risk.

Never underestimate the power of teamwork, it gives the enemy someone else to shoot at. Vitality and Agility in your crew skills. They can live through some shots (depending on numerous factors), and they will swap positions faster. At least we dont have the last man standing concept Gaijin tried a long while back where you could still play with 1 tank crewmember left... got to choose whether to drive or gun and had to sit and wait for them to switch positions if you wanted to do the opposite of what you were doing... good times

Try to treat your tank as an infantry... you know there is no infantry in War Thunder, so the tanks here should pay more attention to protecting themselves than covering infantry in real life-- especially the low tier tanks-- they usually have weak protection, and their armour are more like soldiers' ribs, if the ribs are penetrated, the internal organs will be damaged, and the soldier will die. I mean, sometimes you should not stay in the open terrain, even if you are driving a tank, try use bunkers like buildings or rocks which are more reliable than your armour, otherwise, even if the tank is not destroyed immediately, you will have to endure a long time of repairing and crew replacement after the vehicle get penetrated and paralyzed.
