The_Naa 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2022 Heyo i've been wondering if there is any way in realistic battles game mode to estimate the distance to a target. i think the ''range finding'' skill on the crew would help me with that, but so far i have not noticed anything that would tell me how far the target is. (unless the commander shouts something like ''Tank 500 meters, destroy!'' which i am unable to hear) it's quite annoying when driving my ZTZ96A (P) and the difference in drop off between HEATFS and APFSDS is so great that it becomes annoyingly difficult to lob shells at mad range's
Lord_Prism 1,767 Report post Posted August 8, 2022 The lines on the side of the scope generally correlate with the size of a tank at the range (8) for example, would be at 800 yards or meters

Next it's just mostly experience and range becomes reflex especially if you use that gun a lot. There is one thing that can get you on target in most cases within 2 shots. While in scope fire your shot, stay in scope mode and keep your gun in exact position you fired. Wat h the round until it impacts. That impact point will be close to one of the lines on the vertical post. That mark is now your zero point. Eg if it impact at the 7th line down move the 7th line onto the target and shoot again, your likely to hit or be very close.
EXTOR_9 711 Report post Posted August 8, 2022 (edited) You can mathematically estimate the range using those vertical lines with Distance = Target dimension (in mm) / Mils (the numbers on the vertical lines) as shown here in this old old thread. You can also use the "rangefinding" keybind on your tank controls setting so your commander will estimate the range (1200 m max without rangefinder modification) and show the range of the target on your sights (that 1293 number in your screenshot is the distance to the target). You can also guesstimate the range using the map grid since each grid has a set range. Though it is best to use experience or rangefinding keybind as these two are faster compared to the other manual calculation method. Experience especially helps a lot since overtime you will start to "feel" the range without even needing to rangefind manually with the keybind or with the manual calculation methods, but it take time since you need to get used to it. _Mr_Fahrenheit_ 214 Report post Posted August 9, 2022 Doesn't that tank already have a laser rangerfinder? It should automatically set the gun to the distance once you've range it and then you just have to shoot. Also look at the speed of the round you are firing. The higher the speed (ie: over 1000 m/s), the flatter trajectory will be of the round, which means you don't have to compensate as much for gravity at longer ranges. The other option is to head over to the live section of War Thunder, and download a custom gunsight for you vehicle. They usually have a method to determine vehicle distance, using a scale built into the sight.

_Mr_Fahrenheit_ 214 Report post Posted August 10, 2022 Since you mentioned it in your first post, but according to https://wiki.warthunder.com/ZTZ96A_(P) it has a laser range finder. I just confirmed it works on that tank, by going for a test drive and setting the difficulty to Realistic. You just point your crosshair at the target, select the key you have set for the rangefinder (R for me which I believe is default) and wait. It measures and automatically sets the sight to that range. You just need to fire. All tanks have the rangefinder, but not all will automatically set you gunsight.
EXTOR_9 711 Report post Posted August 10, 2022 (edited) You need set up keybind for rangefinder first. Edited August 10, 2022 by EXTOR_9
