I am completely confused with the tech tree.I cant understand which tanks i need to research,which i am researching,which lines to follow...

Thats the reason i never really tried progressing on this game throughout those years since i created my account.The tech tree is a total mess!! I am busting my head over how the tech tree works.Any help(explain like i am five)whould be highly appreciated.So,i am coming from WG games where the tech trees are a linear line towards tier x and thats the way u progress them.U have to have researched the previous tier vehicle in order to progress to the next tier.I am used to tanks,planes having more than one gun/turret option(s)at the same tier "package", for example ,kv1 you can have it with 76mm zis-5 gun,122mm u11 gun,85mm f30,and a 57mm gun options.Now on warthunder you have:kv-1(l11),kv-1(zis-5),kv-1E and S.Why is this insanity happening,why this game has to complicate things so much?Why dont you just put all possible gun/turret variations on the original kv-1 "package"??So my question is:in order to progress to the next tank in line do i have to research all the kv-1 variants ? Do any modules remain from researched kv-1 "package"??(i use kv-1 as an example,i have yet to research it,by using kv-1 as an example i mean all simular tanks that have those weird combinations/variants)

So now with my case 1) i have researched the m3 gmc(destroyer) without researching the previous m8 hmc how is that possible? Furthermore i noticed that the higher tier tanks are not even destroyers,they are light tanks???? seriously!!!! I started grinding this line cause i wanted to play a destroyer line??!!

2)The m3 stuart has a little box beneath it that gives me the ability to research the m5a3 stuart.Do i have to research it in order to progress to m5a1?

3)I nearly researched zis-30 without even knowing it or even grinding this line????

4)I have t28 but i havent researched t28(1938)????

5)Why do i have so many reserve tanks??

Why does the game allows me to skip tanks in the same line?Why the progress is not linear and clear?Why all that zig zag between researchable vehicles???

Vehicles have been moved around in the tree since the last time you played so since they were available to research for you at some point you haven't been locked out of researching them, highlight the red vehicles and it'll tell you how many many vehicles that you have left to purchase to unlock that tier

On the left where Rank are displayed you can see for your soviet tech tree you are at 5 vehicles out of 6 to unlock the rank 2.

In order to unlock a new rank you need to unlock the required amount (wrote on the left) by purchasing (not necessary to crew them) those tanks from the previous rank in this case rank 1. 

Premiums from the specific rank are counted toward the required amount as well.
 

From there you just have to zoom out and look for the tank you want to grind and see if you'll have enough vehicles down the road to unlock it. 

 

Regarding modules its not like in WoT where you buy cannon turret etc, in WT you have let's say the best variant of the tank and each tank/plane have modules that increase specific stats (turret traverse,engine power,mobility,etc).

Ammo is among the most important module you want to get after the tools and the fpe otherwise you won't be able to repair and extinguish fire. 

 

Also keep in mind that research efficiency decrease, for example if you use a reserve tank to research a Rank 3 tank you'll get almost no RP.
On each vehicle stat card you have a line that show until which rank you can use it without loosing efficiency.

This tech tree is linear - you have to research vehicles and variants of vehicles in the order they are presented - ie follow the arrows.

 

There are only a few limitations:

 

1/ you have to research a certain number of vehicles (or planes, ships, heli) in a tier before you can start any vehicle in the next teir

2/ you must research the immediate preceeding vehicle before progressing to the next one (ie follow the arrows) - but note that vehicles that are groupled together amount to 1 item - researching any 1 of them is enough to meet this requirement.  That said........

3/ Sometimes vehicles get moved around the tree for "balance" - in these cases you might find the research sequence is no longer linear.  Those cases are pretty rare - but an example is that you have the ZIS-30 without the SU-122 because the Su-122 got moved before the ZIS-30 at some stage.

 

Other than that - follow the arrows.

if its linear then why can i play with t28 while the previous tank t28 1938 is not researched? From what i understand, if you have researched a specific number of tanks of the same rank you can unlock tanks from the next rank(ex rank 2)but it begs the question,can i research whichever tank i want for example can i jump from t28 to kv-2 without researching kv-1? Or can i jump from t-28 to t-34?

Because the T-28 (1938) was added after you unlocked the "original" T-28 - it is one of those examples where the tree changed since you last played.

 

And no, you can't "jump" the linear progression - you start the next tier with hte first vehicles in it and move through it as indicated by the arrows.

 

Ther are some placed where ther are no arrows - eg from KV-1s to KV-1 (ZIS-5) - in those places you CAN start researching without having the previous vehicle because there is no required previous vehicle - assuming you have unlocked that tier of course.

 

I think you are overthinking it now - there are exceptions, they've been explained, and the system really is not complicated, despite your protestations.

Gaijin does not 'grandfather' you in.

 

I had a boat, that was researched, not purchased, then he added a boat above it.  I couldn't buy the researched one till I finished the one above it.

 

 

Think this is bad?

 

How about researching the Italian planes TWICE.  Once when they were in the German tree, and again when they added the Italians!

A fellow WoT to WT Transitioner, Welcome!

In War Thunder you keep researcing the vehicle that is selected for research, the points does not go into the "next in line" - unless that is the one selected. Meaning that you can research Light tanks in your TD's for example - So you don't have to play vehicles you don't like.

Also, it is best to move up in Br with several vehicles - since it is advantageous to have 3+ vehicles at the same Br since the MM goes by your highest - so moving up (or down depending on how you look at it) the tech tree broadly is better than going down a single line.

Sometimes there are "gaps" in the tech trees (usually T3) where there is no arrow  to a vehicle from the previous tier - as soon as you have bought the required number of vehicles from the previous tier you can start research at that point. So you could start researching the M6A1 without researchung the M4A3(105) for example.

You can choose withever crew you want to pilot a tank, but they are basically "slots" - so if you pick slot 2's crew for a vehicle, that's the position they are in, and the only way to move the tank to another slot is to train an additional slots crew to drive the tank. It doesn't matter in the beginning, but when you want specific lineups it can be frustrating to realise that you picked the wrong crew to train in the tank.

For the right to field them in differnt trees, and giving you something that new players can never get - those Italian planes in the German tree.

This is not the first time something like this has happened:

 

The 100 decal, in the Russian decals.    I had it on many, many, many vehicles.    Then the game decided that I have to earn it AGAIN.   

 

 

As far as the Italians.

 

Of no value:           Ability to field TIER ONE AND TIER TWO Italian planes in the German line up.

 

Of value:                Transferring those planes that we spaded to the Italian tree, tier one and tier two planes THAT WE HAVE TO SPADE AGAIN.

Alternatively I know the meaning perfectly well.... and in this case what would be grandfathered is the  ability to operate the next boat if it had been purchased, and continue to research the line from it.

 

You were not able tp purchase the researched boat because you did not own the boat immediately before it - as per normal rules in the game.

 

Lots of people like having the Italian planes in the German tree - sucks to be one who doesn't value that I suppose.

Br and Tech Tree ranking is BS!! There should be one and not two!! Certain vehicles should not be put in the same Tech tree ranking as others because it is giving some an unfair advantage especially when some vehicles in the same Br and Tech tree ranking have either Thermals or none at all!!
