Renault R35 with FCM Turret

Introduction:

Spoiler

While the Renault R35 was being produced it was found necessary by the French Army that there was a requirement for some interchangeability with the existing tank fleet. The army had models from Hotchkiss, Renault, Panhard and various other companies that all used very different components which from a military standpoint was a logistical nightmare. While it was determined that the APX R was appropriate for the R35 in a wartime emergency the FCM turret could be supplemented to existing R35 tanks as seen by the photo above. R35 serial number 50332 was successfully trialed with the turret from FCM in 1937 while the FCM 36 prototype was trialed with a Renault APX R turret. Following these tests the 50332 had its original turret re-installed and returned to active service. This interesting series of events make for a nice rank 1 premium or event vehicle representing the stunning aesthetics of interwar French tank design.

  • WayOfTheWolk changed the title to Renault R35 with FCM Turret

Hello,

Given the nature and obscurity of the vehicle it is understandable that there is a lack of information on it. However if you can provide any additional details, that'd be greatly appreciated.

Besides that; Open for discussion.

the idea behind it was to find out if the FCM.36 turret who was lighter and faster to built would be a good alternative to the APX-R turret. and at the opposite, if the APX-R turret could be mounted on the FCM.36 chassis who was more advance but assumed to not have the capacity to mount the 37mm SA.38 gun.

it was mostly a struggle to prove who was superior to the other. if Renault and Hotchkiss was at a sort of truce in their rivality to get orders from the French army (infantry for the R.35 and Cavalry for the H.35) the coming of a new player to take away the orders was threatening the position of the wining rivals. especially since the FCM.36 was superior in the protection and for chemical warfare, it also propose a better autonomy, better fuel consumption and better mobility.the main flaws was the price significantly higher cost.

so they studied alternative such as the R.35 using the FCM turret, and the FCM.36 using the APX-R turret. those test mostly proven the capacity to switch one turret to another in to make it easier for the supply line to send parts. at then end it was never really used as the FCM.36 was used in very small number and so they never really mounted the turret from one or another tank in the unites. all had their own turret. and to be honest, the turret is not usually the part who break down easily. when it happen, usually the whole tank was destroyed. or at least abandoned.

The ironic part being that in the end it was the FCM turret that couldn't take the recoil of the SA38 while the APX R turret was completely suited for it.

yeah, we know, but neither Renault or Hotchkiss or APX wanted the FCM to be successful. they tried to point out the flaws to prove the FCM.36 was "inferior" at least in this part and doing so, they could secure their share of business with the French gouvernment

here is a picture of the same tank as you show with a slightly different angle
